Assignment 2
I have chosen a physical object that I encounter on a daily basis and this would be my
green Honda Civic 1999 Ex. The reason I have chosen this object is because It is part of my daily
life and I would not recognize as art in my eyes. This object is green with some black in other
parts, it is about sixteen years old, and it is handy. This car is about ten feet long, it has two
doors, and the hood is black. It has four old wheels and the inside is has grey seats. It is not a
brand new car, it has some dents ere and there but not to noticeable.
I honestly would not consider this object as art because it is not the type of object I would
consider art. This object is old looking and is not as brand new. The quality of this car is not as
beautiful as I would imagine art being. It has dents and has a faded black hood that makes this
the object not as good looking. Art for me is something like a painting, creativity, a way of
expressing yourself, beautiful, and pictures. Art is a way where you an express yourself in a way
of form you want. A way in where you are creative and expressing your ideas of what you
believe. Art is also something you admire and enjoy doing such as painting, taking pictures, and
fulfilling your life with colors. It can be an object that you think it is beautiful in your eyes and
have a sense of feeling towards it.

The object I chose has nothing to do and related to what I consider art to me. The reason
why is because I don not see any beauty of this object to me. This car I do not consider valuable
and I don not appreciate it daily. In my eyes I ignore this object as being something that I would
consider art because art to me comes has to do with the beauty of an object, something you
admire. A car to me is just a daily object I encounter daily that that it is very convenient to me to
for school, work, and other activities. I would definitely not consider it art because it does not
meet my preconceived notions of art.
A new way to examine this object would be looking at it in a Functionalist Theory. This
theory is based on a different way to define art that has to with Aesthetic reasoning. As in the
lesson it defines Art as being define as a device or means of expression or communication of
emotions, ideas, and mimesis (Aesthetic Reasoning, soft chalk). It is way of looking at art from
a different perspective a different type of art. It is the nature of mental states, that has to do with
its aesthetic value. Therefore, it play a role in practical functions. For example this object which
is my green Honda civic car would be an object that is created with the intention to satisfy the
aesthetic criteria. This object is intended to the daily utility and practical function I encounter
everyday, without giving it any knowledge. This object has the aesthetic properties of an object
that depends on its own functionality. We must view the task of the object as beautiful.
This object would be consider aesthically valuable because it acquires the objects that are
aesthically valuable that have the capacity to produce pleasure in those people who experience I
and learn how to appreciate them. For example experiencing this object in a daily basis you learn
how to appreciate it because with out a car you will struggle to go to work or even to school.
Another aesthetic principle would be the objects that are aesthically valuable if they have the
capacity to produce certain emotions we value, at least when the emotion is brought about by art

rather than life (More Parker, p.464). For example when having a car and learning to value it, it
becomes to give you an emotion of sadness or even anger when your car is not working. This is
creating an feelings of learning how to value an object we do not see art in. These aesthetical
value create are the functions to create some kind of subjective or inner state to the people.
(More Parker, p. 465).
This leads that this object brings an aesthetical value to people because it has responded
to the dynamic of cultural change. The object in this case my car has an aesthetical value to art,
as we learn how to see its function. Therefore, you would consider this object a functionalism
that derives from art. You learned to see how it connects to art in a way you did not see at first.
You began to value the function of this object, by seeing how it connects with cultural change or
even technology change. If it was not or cars now in days many of the human beings would not
be going to their destination which is work, school, and other extra curricular activities. In the
past history their did not exist cars you either walked or ride a horse. It would take hours to
arrive to your destination. Therefore, we need to acquire the value of this object which those who
have a car encounter it everyday and do not know how to appreciate or develop an
emotion/feelings.
