Task 2 Discuss the theories of communication

There are many theories of communication, everyone have different opinions on

the way we communicate by processing information, understanding it etc. Some
scientists have come up with the most effective ways on how we communicate,
and most people now go by there ideas. The theories include the communication
cycle by Argyles theory and Tuckmans theory of group interaction.
Communication cycle by Argyles is most effective in a care work situation, by
understanding, processing, reflecting and checking out. The communication
cycle has 6 stages. Stage one is when idea occurs, this makes us think of
something we want to communicate about. Stage two is when the message is
coded, and here we consider what we are going to say how we are going to say it
and decide which form of communication should be used. Third stage is when
the message gets sent. Message can be send in a way that we might find more
comfortable (speech or writing). Stage four is when the message is received. The
other person hears or sees the message sent by us. For example in health and
social care can be when a nurse sits with a patient and communicates face to
face. The patient will receive the message and will respond by using facial
expressions, or words, and the nurse will understand that the patient has
received the message. Stage five is when the message is decoded. At this stage
the person has to interpret what we have communicated by using their
knowledge of communication skills. And the last stage is when the message is
understood by the other person by communicating clearly. The participant can
then give feedback which repeats the process and builds into a communication
cycle.
The theory of Group interaction by Tuckman is formed by 4 stages. First stage is
forming, where members would ask questions about the purpose and aims of the
group and also share each others information. Stage two is storming, here care
professionals addresses issues such as what problems they are really supposed
to solve, how they will function independently and together, and leadership
model they will accept. Third stage is norming. At this stage, care professionals
establishes on the rules and values by which they operate and also it is the time
where the group starts to develop. And the stage four is performing. In this last
stage communication becomes clearer, because the group finally matures and
gets down to working together.
