OBJECTIVE/EVALUATION
Students will write create a short story similar to the poem
The Aliens Have Landed by using two banana split words on
each page.

MATERIALS:
A copy of The Aliens Have Landed by Kenn Nesbitt
Example paragraph ready to show
Journals
Pencils

ANTICIPATORY SET:
The teacher will catch the students attention by beginning
the lesson off by reading their absurd example they have
made.

LESSON INTRODUCTION:
Today we are going to practice using unique words by
thinking of banana split words to use in a short story.

TEACHER INSTRUCTION:

Using unique and different words in writing is important to


keep a readers attention. They help a person become a
better and more creative writer. They also help the writer
develop a broader vocabulary. To improve your writing it is
great to use a thesaurus to come up with new words for the
same meaning as words you normally use.
Writing banana split words are words like, extravagant,
extraordinary, and distinctive. These are words that arent
used as often as classy, awesome, and unique.
Not an example: It felt great jumping in the water after a
long day of work outside in the hot sun.
Correct example: It felt delightful jumping in the water after
an exhausting day of work outside in the blistering sun.
Teachers Example: Show the students how the teacher used
different words rather than words that are usually used.
Today we will be reading a poem called The Aliens Have
Landed by Kenn Nesbitt. While reading you will be thinking
about all of the unique words Dr. Seuss uses in his books.
Afterwards, you will come up with a short story with at least
two banana split words on each page.

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING:


Teacher will ask for the students to pick some banana split
examples that were used in the poem. Students will then
communicate with each other and come up with a few of
their own unique words that they could use in their stories.

APPLICATION/GUIDED PRACTICE/INDEPENDENT
PRACTICE:
Students will write a short story using at least two unique
words on each page. Students can write about whatever
they wish to write about.

CLOSURE:
Today we practiced using unique words when writing. These
words are used to improve writing and keep the readers
attention. You can use different words when holding a
conversation or writing a paper. Using unique banana split
words will definitely impress your peers and future teachers!

DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION:
Have a student who might have trouble writing write only a
paragraph using three different sequence words. The student
will have a para educator to help them write words they
might have trouble with.

Samples used: Teachers sample paragraph of banana split
writing.
