Wednesday: Why leaves change color? (book), K.W.L Chart (review),

Thursday: Leaf Investigation Worksheet, real leaves
Friday: My Leaf Book, crayons, sciccors
5. Instructional Procedures:
Monday:
a. Motivation/Engagement:
Teacher will take students to the playground for a "Leaf Walk"
During the walk, teacher will ask students "Where do you see leaves?" "Do you see
leaves anywhere else?" "What do you notice about the leaves?"
What do you notice about the trees?" "Do all the trees have
the same kind of leaves?" "Besides leaves, what other parts of a tree can
you see?"
b .Developmental Activities or Learning Experiences:

Students will engaged in a discussion about "What they know about leaves? (DOK 1)
"what would you like to learn about leaves? (DOK 1)
Teacher will create a K.W.L chart and write student responses.
c. Closure:
Review what students know about leaves (K.W.L chart)
d. Extension:
If time permits, students will work on Scholastic Autumn Leaves are
Falling Down
Tuesday:
a. Motivation/Engagement:
Teacher will show students leaves of different colors and sizes.
Teacher will ask students "Do all the leaves look the same?" "How
are the leaves different?" "Do you think leaves are important
for plants?why?"
b .Developmental Activities or Learning Experiences:
Teacher will read the book "Leaves" by Gail Sunders-Smith
Students will listen to teacher and answer the following questions:
How leaves grow? What leaves do for plants? From which part
of the plant do leaves grow? Name two things plants need in
order to survive?
Throughout the reading teacher will explain unfamiliar words to
students.
c. Closure:
Teacher will review the importance of leaves, how they grow, and what
do plants need in order to survive.
d. Extension:
If time permits, students will work on labeling parts of the leaf
worksheet.
Wednesday:
a. Motivation/Engagement:
Teacher will show students leaves of different color and ask students "Why do you think
leaves change colors?
b .Developmental Activities or Learning Experiences:
Teacher will read the book "why leaves Change Color?"
Teacher will ask students the following questions: Name one reason why leaves are
important to the tree? "Name the three most important thing leaves need to make
their food? "What helps the tree to grow?" "Where is the extra sugar stored?
c. Closure:
Students will complete a web about leaves and review the three
important things leaves need to make their food.
d. Extension:
If time permits, students will draw and color their own leaf.

Thursday:
a. Motivation/Engagement:
Teacher will give each students a leaf and with a partner they will share
their leaf and make observations.
b .Developmental Activities or Learning Experiences:
Teacher will explain activity and show students how to measure their
leaves using cubes.
Students will complete a Leaf Investigation Worksheet.
c. Closure:
As a whole class, students will discuss what they have learned about
leaves.
Teacher will student responses to K.W.L chart
d. Extension:
If time permits, students will have at least 10 minutes of silent reading
books about leaves.
Friday:
a. Motivation/Engagement:
Teacher will give each students a leaf ans ask them to describe it.
Teacher will ask "What color is your leaf?" "Does it feel smooth?" Does the edge of
your leaf has points?"
b .Developmental Activities or Learning Experiences:
Students will participate in a leaf sorting activity.
Students will differentiate leaves by shape, color, blades, ect. They will
paste the leaves on construction paper.
Students will answer the following questions: "Do all leaves look the
same?" "How are they different?" "How many points do the
leaves have?"
c. Closure:
Students will create a My Leaf Book.
d. Extension:
If time permits, students will have 10 minutes of silent reading books
about leaves.
6. Accommodations, Modifications and Differentiations for Diverse Learners:
Accommodations: Teacher will assign a peer buddy to ELL students.
Teacher will work one-on-one with student.
Modifications: Teacher will circulate classroom during activity to
provide assistance.
Differentiations: Teacher will provide longer-think time for those who
need it.

7. Assessment and Evaluation of Learning:


a. Formative:

Student will demonstrate understanding by answering given


questions throughout the reading and leaf walk.
b. Summative:
Students will demonstrate understanding of the topic by completion of
activities such as leaf investigation worksheet and creating their own
leaf book.
