Subsite beacon best practice to avoid overheating.

All Subsite beacons are equipped with an internal digital temperature

measurement. The beacon is displayed on the locator and remote display
screens.

Once you hear the audible sound and the icon flash you should do the following:
Immediately stop drilling and pull back at least 1 meter.

Pump fluid downhole to cool beacon.

Allow to cool till only 1 bar is shown on the temperature icon.
Check the functions of the beacon and continue to drill.
Monitor temperature closely.

Beacon overheating can be avoided by:

Proper drilling techniques

Avoiding Clogged jets
o (check water pressure gauge when you turn on the water, if the gauge pressure
increases rapidly and maintains a constant pressure then the nozzle is clogged).
Insuring mudflow & poorly mixed mud
Locate and track the beacon in the drill head accurately and correctly during drilling.
Removing the beacon from the pilot after the pilot bore or monitoring the same during
pullback for temperature increase
Avoiding continued exposure of the beacon to heat, due to frictional heating of the drill
head.
o Also includes leaving beacon housing in the sun with beacon inside.
Misuse and improper handling of beacon
Increase drilling fluid flow.
