Cyber Bullying and Mental Health

Lesson Plan
Unit/Topic:
Year Level:
Lesson Duration:

How Bullying on the Internet affects the Mental Health of Young Users
Year 9
Stand alone lesson for 50 minutes

Domain(s), Dimension(s) & AUSVELS covered:

This lesson plan module supports a number of learning areas in the Australian Curriculum, including Interdisciplinary Learning,
ICT for communicating, Cross-curriculum Priority, Health and Physical Education and Technologies.
ICT, an interdisciplinary domain, focuses on providing students with the tools to transform their learning and to enrich their
learning environment. The knowledge, skills and behaviours identified for this domain enable students to:

Create information products that demonstrate their understanding of concepts, issues, relationships and processes.

Communicate locally and globally to solve problems and to share knowledge.

Understand the implications of the use of ICT and their social and ethical responsibilities as users of ICT.

Students are provided with tools and strategies to monitor learning patterns and problem solving strategies. This provides a
sound foundation for transforming personal learning. They gain an understanding of Internet protocols and strategies for
exchanging information, which enables them to share and challenge their own and other peoples ideas and solutions with a
global audience.
Progression Points covered: Progression Point 8.0 - 9.5
Cross-Curriculum Priority Focus: This lesson focuses on the impact and implications of cyber-bullying and threats on access
and use of information and communication technologies by Indigenous Australians. This lesson will also focus on the crosscurriculum priorities where Digital Technologies have played an imposing role on racism and crime on the internet.

They were frustrated without internet.

They were indifferent and it did not impact them.
They enjoyed being internet free as they got to engage
themselves in other innovative ways. Students will either
identify themselves as internet addicts or not.
This video shows a popular Indigenous Music Band B2M
spread awareness using Strong Choices on what is
acceptable and not when using the internet. They discuss
their ethics and what their culture talks about being
cybersmart and cybersafe and the right thing to do. This
video is used to show students how to enhance their own and
others health, safety and wellbeing. It allows students to
identify healthy, safe and active choices.
They will be asked to identify behaviours that comprise
bullying on the internet, strategies on being Cybersmart,
what the culture says about leaving a positive digital footprint
and how to be responsible and Cyber Safe. In addition,
students have the opportunity to explore situations, assess
options, seek solutions and put their ideas into action.
Students will then be split into teams of two each and asked
to 'think-pair-share' on the topic that best appealed to them
from the video and the worksheets. Some of the topics that
the students will identify are:
Cyberbullying and Cyber Payback

Sharing photographs and posting on Social Networking

Sites
Sharing Passwords with friends
Social Mocking
Being Cyber Smart
Responsibilities of a positive Bystander

Lesson Pre-requisites

Students need to have a sound understanding of cyber safety while using the internet. The pre-requisites for this lesson is that
students need to gain an understanding of Internet protocols and strategies for exchanging information, which enables them to
share and challenge their own and other peoples ideas and solutions with a global audience. ICT supports knowledge-building
among teams and enables team members to collaborate, enquire, interact and integrate prior knowledge with new
understanding. Protocols for receiving, transferring and publishing ideas and information are needed to promote communication
Differentiation
To simplify: Students will be given a Cyber Smart topic of their choice and they will be asked to create a poster presentation
rather than the PowerPoint presentation.
To challenge: Students will be asked to amend the Cyber Safety survey with 5 more questions to filter out more options to
identify if they have been bullied on the internet.
Evaluate
A summative assessment is included in this lesson where students are asked to 'think-pair-share' on the topic that best appealed
to them at the conclusion of the Youtube video and the worksheet. The students are then to create a PowerPoint presentation on
their chosen topic and submitted for assessment by the sessional teacher. The rubrics to be followed to assess the PowerPoint
