Jacksonsuggestedit
FederalpolicyunderJacksonhadsought,through
theIndianRemovalActof1830,tomoveall
IndianpeoplestolandswestoftheMississippi
River.Continuingthispolicy,VanBuren
supportedfurtherremovalsafterhiselectionin
1836.Thefederalgovernmentsupervisedthe
removaloftheCherokeepeoplein1838,aforced
staggerwesttotheMississippiinwhichafull
quarteroftheCherokeenationdied.
