going into the interview? Some of the biases that I had going into
this interview was the fact that my client
comes from a house hold where everyone is illiterate and that my client was known as a bad student. With these biases, I felt as if my client would not corporate with me and that he would not understand the questions that I may ask.
What were some value differences between you and
the client?
Some of the value differences between my
client and I are education, appearance, and
how you present yourself.
What events or life experiences have
shaped them into the person they are? My client is an 8 years old who is in the second grade.
My client was held back in the first grade due to lack of
education at the grade level. My client comes from a house hold where he stays with his mother and grandmother. Neither one of them graduated from high school. The grandmother did not make it to high school and the mother dropped out at the age of 16. His mother has never taught him to read nor write because she could not. In fact, my client did not know how to tie his shoe until I showed him. He requires a lot of one on one attention for him to learn something. Due to his house hold and him growing up in poverty, my client has little knowledge of whats beyond the Rennert community.
What is the staff recommendation
about diagnosis, Interventions or treatment? Some of the staff recommendation for my
client is for him to be in EC classes. Here in
Robeson County, the students must go through RTI Intervention before they can be put in EC. This intervention goes through three tiers. My client is currently in tier three and on his way to EC before the New Year. This previous week, the staff and the parents worked together to get the student help from resources in the community. The only down fall was the effort from the parents since the student parents are not together.
What does research say on their
diagnosis/problem/treatment? It has been noted that RTI is not just for
children with special needs or a learning
disability but it is also to help students who are struggling with a skill or lesson. Diagnosis: Teacher will use test scores and other measures of progress to choose a researched and proven intervention suited to help the child learn Problem: Students who are struggling with a skill or lesson Treatment: Interventions; More focused interventions are used to help the child master the skill. RTI strategies address both
What changes do recommend for the agency or
service (Needs of agency, changes, and rights issues)? Report those to supervisor.
Some of the changes that need to be made is
the process to get students in EC. The way RTI
is set up is that it can take up to three years before the student can actually get into EC. By this time, the student is even further behind. The school board requires the teachers and others faculty working with the student to try different interventions to help the child before putting the child in EC. This is the issue with my client. He is on a kindergarten education level because the teachers could not make the time to give the student one on one help.
