Title: Jurassic Park

Pages:448
Author: Michael Crichton
Summary:
Strange things are happening on the Island of Isla Nublar off the coast of Costa Rica. A
young girl visiting a biological reserve is attacked by a mysterious lizard like creature. John
Hammond, an eccentric billionaire, founder of INGen, is using genetic engineering to bring
dinosaurs back to life, creating a biological preserve theme park. He convinces paleontologist
Dr. Alan Grant and his student Ellie Sattler, a paleobotanist that their expertise is needed on the
island. Grant and Sattler are soon joined by Dr. Ian Malcolm, mathematician and professor of
Chaos theory.
Throughout the book we are kept in suspense as dangerous dinosaurs such as tyrannosaurus
rex and velociraptors wreak havoc all over the island. Malcolm is convinced the island is bound
to fail because of his chaos theory, or the science of the butterfly effect, because nature cannot
be controlled. The island is revealed to be a bioengineered theme park or Jurassic Park.
Jurassic Park uses cloned female dinosaurs for their attractions. Everything seems to be going
smoothly until the power goes out, deactivating the electric fence security system enclosing the
dinosaurs and allowing them to escape. Grant and Malcolm are on a tour with Hammond's
grandkids when they are suddenly attacked by a large t-rex. After narrowly escaping the
tyrannosaur, Grant and children (Tim and Lex) stumble upon a dinosaur egg. This egg is proof
that the dinosaurs have been breeding, and proof of Malcolm's theory that nature will find a way
to reproduce.
Meanwhile Dennis Nedry, employee and technical advisor of Jurassic Park, has shut down the
power and is attempting to steal the technology using dinosaur embryos. As Dennis reaches the
main gates, his jeep crashes and is stuck, fatal for Nedry. As it happens, a Dilophosaurus is
lurking near by. He spits his venomous liquid over Nedry, blinding him and then moving in to
attack him, picking him up in his jaws and devouring him.
Malcolm, knocked out from the t-rex attack, is found by Muldoon and Sattler and brought
back to the headquarters of Jurassic Park. While Grant and the children attempt to go back to
them, the group encounters two dilophosaurus and escape by laying down in a raft, floating by.
At the end of the river they are once again attacked by the tyrannosaur, and game warden
Muldoon soon spots them, tries to save them but they escape by falling down a waterfall where
the t-rex cannot follow. Grant, Tim and Lex find a young juvenile male velociraptor, which is
again proof that the dinosaurs are breeding. They eventually make it to the visitor center and
are able to contact the others for help. Sattler arrives and distracts a group of raptors that had
come to attack them while Grant manages reactivates the Parks main power.

In conclusion, the remaining survivors are taken off the island by helicopter, while the island
is bombarded with napalm, a flammable liquid.
About the Author: Michael Crichton (1942-2008). Michael Crichton was an incredibly talented
man - writer, filmmaker, doctor and visionary. His signature novel is Jurassic Park (1990) which
was developed into a film in 1993. Some of his books included: The Andromeda Stain, Congo,
Sphere, Rising Sun and The Lost World (Jurassic Park 2). After Crichtons death in 2008 his
novel Pirate Latitudes, was published. Mirco was later finished by Richard Preston and
published on November 22, 2003. Crichton also created the #1 television series ER.
Theme: The impossible has happened - Dinosaurs, extinct for millions of years, have been
brought back to life. This book was written in 1990 when biotechnology promised to be the
greatest revolution in human history, transforming every aspect of human life. Crichton is
concerned and disturbed by the lack of control in this emerging industry.Crichton illustrates this
by showing what would happen if terrifying dinosaurs were brought back to life by science, and
not able to be controlled.
Rating:*****
I would rate this book five stars because throughout the book ,we are kept in suspense, as the
dinosaurs wreak havoc on Isla Nublar and the humans face constant danger. I also appreciate
how the author tried to make the science behind the book realistic and warns of the dangers of
using biotechnology. Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who loves action,
suspense, and dinosaurs!
