LITERACY ASSIGNMENT

Summary of First Article

Rows of desks all facing forward was the appropriate way of teaching when lecturing was
the preferred method. Nowadays, teachers and professors have become more technologically
savvy, and electronics have made an abrupt entrance into the classroom. From Smart Boards to
tablets for all students, it is now inevitable that people must learn to use the technology that has
so suddenly taken over the classrooms. It used to be that people were trying so hard to keep the
overheads and the simple paper handouts the norm, but now they dont really have a choice but
to accept the technology that high school and colleges are imposing upon them. Although this is
not always a bad thing, students are now able to work in groups more often with their new
technology and solve problems more easily. It also enables students to take more copious notes.
Some teachers are embracing this new technological change, while others despise it. It leaves
students freed from desks and teachers untethered from the front of the room. It also gives
students unfettered ability to work together in groups without the worry of missing a paper
handout.
Two Additional Web Articles
In my second search, I used the search engines Bing and Google. I used the keywords
Mobile Technology in the Classrooms. These keywords are broad enough that it would not
overlap information from the first article too much. During my search, I found that Google was
the most rewarding search engine. The first article was one published by Scholastic, a schoolbased company that has experience in the classrooms. This gave them an edge in saying what
technology is really like in the classrooms of todays society. While the first article that Bing

gave me was simply an overview of what used to be considered technology in the classrooms,
this search engine never really zoned in on todays 21st Century classrooms, while the article
retrieved by Bing did just that.
TRRAAP
Time - There is no specific date or time on the first article that I analyzed. The article
does not appear to have been updated since its original publication.
Relevance The first article relates exactly to what I was searching for. It talks
specifically about technology in todays 21st Century classrooms, and how it is changing,
and not just an overview of technology in the classrooms from beginning to end.
Reliability - The source is Scholastic Reading Club, a very reputable source when it
comes to experience in the classrooms.
Authority - The author of this article is a certified educator and author of The Education
Technology Blog. He works as a teacher and freelance writer in Iowa. The article he
wrote was published on the Scholastic Reading Club website, which is a highly soughtafter source in todays classrooms.
Accuracy - The information is very trustworthy, as it comes from a well-known source. It
is supported by evidence, as the article takes quotes from teachers in actual classrooms.
It has not been tested for accuracy, as teachers everywhere have different opinions.
Purpose - It was written to inform people of the changing ways in todays 21st Century
classrooms. There is a bias towards being in favor of technology in the classroom, as it
indicates how Netbooks, Ipads, and cell phones are becoming increasingly popular in
todays classrooms, and it is easy to see why.
Scholarly Articles from CCBC Library Database
In the two CCBC Database Articles I used ProQuest Central. This a very broad
database that does not focus specifically on one thing. Rather, it gave me a large array of
articles to choose from. I used the keywords technology in the classrooms, which
2

didnt focus on one specific grade or one specific kind of technology. By using
ProQuest Central, I found pro and con viewpoints from different teachers. One teacher
was against the use of technology in classrooms, and who was not ready for it, another
who was looking forward to embracing the increasing use of technology in the
classrooms.
Comparing The Web and Journal Articles
When comparing the web and journal articles, I found that the Web was the most
helpful, because not all of the teachers who are interviewed are posted on one of the
CCBC databases, therefore not all of their viewpoints are expressed. Also, articles on the
CCBC databases are considered scholarly, while the articles on an everyday search
engine can be posted by almost anyone, so the viewpoints vary much more than any of
the CCBC databases. The simple search engines were much easier to access than the
databases. You did not have to pick a specific category before beginning your search, and
it gave a small description of what the article was about before you even opened it. With
the databases, you needed to first pick what search engine you were going to use, then
type in your keywords, then find an article that was available in full PDF form right
away.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, I believe it was easiest to use the search engines rather than the databases,
not only because of the ease of access, but also because that is what I have traditionally
used, and the CCBC databases have never been my go-to method for completing a
research project.
