Group brainstorm and share
- Explain the different components of the brainstorm
matrix
- Split students up in to small groups of 3 or 4
- Ask students to fill out matrix with specific examples
and quotes from the text
- After 20 minutes, get students to swap with other
groups and add to their sheets
- Share on the board and get students to copy

Introduce students to text response essay. Begin looking at
themes and ideas, as well as the writing structure. Students
should begin to have an idea, so that they can get straight into
it next week

Plan and write introduction


- Using the prompt provided, students will begin
planning an introduction
- Address the entire question
- 5 or 6 sentences
- Define key terms for the purpose of this essay
- Include title and author of text
- Brief context statement relevant to the topic
- Outline main supporting points of essay
- Write finished paragraph
- Ask students to share

Topic sentences and/or introduction to be shared at the


start of next class

Plan each body paragraph


- Talk about 3 main body paragraphs (love, resilience,
what is really important in life)
- Create topic sentences (give an example)
- Begin structuring and writing first body paragraph

Planner worksheet will allow students to brainstorm ideas and


break down the entire essay into smaller parts. An introduction
should be well underway and students should be thinking
about starting to write the next parts of their essay (topic
sentence, contention, paragraphs, TEEL)
