Activities

Start the class off with going through their

morning ritual of jolly phonics before moving onto
an explanation of their literacy groups for the day.
Students will be broken up into their Literacy
groups with Group 1 completing match up games
with capital and lowercase letters and Group 2
fixing the spelling and grammar in pre-prepared
jumbled sentences. Group 3 will be working
together as a team to play Eggy Words on the
iPad (where students swipe the word thats on the
egg to gain points until theyve swiped enough
eggs with the word on it to try to spell that word.
If wrong they play the level again with that word)
And Group 4 with work with a teacher on the
smartboard to play the game Forest Phonetics (a
spelling game similar to hangman although
students must spell the full word before being told
whether they are correct or not).
After the allocated Literacy group time is
completed, students will move onto reading the
Sunday Chutney picture storybook as a class and
answering questions verbally throughout before
being asked to handwrite what some of their
interests and likes are and what they themselves
might want to become when they grow up.
Students willimprove

in their phonic knowledge,

spelling and grammar as well as groups 3 and 4
progressing their ICT skills on this particular day.
Students will also express/remember ideas
associated to the book from the prior lesson and
think about what their likes/interests are and what
they want to be when older.

Strategies

the phonics sounds and actions

more and develop their abilities to monitor/teach
groups.
Once students have written what they
like/interests are and what they want to be when
older, they can draw images about what theyve
written. Activity groups shouldnt need extension
work as each activity has different ability levels so
difficulty can be increased if need be.
Ask students what theyve learnt from the book
and what some of the things they liked and didnt
like about the book.
Test how many and how quickly students get the
phonic card sounds and actions and how well they
do with the alphabetic matching, spelling and
grammar activities as well as how many can
answer questions on Sunday Chutney.
