Names: Zach and Zali

Description: This is to be done in sequence with the Discussion of Shapes
learning experience. We will encourage the children to use the shapes
provided (Circles, rectangles, triangles) to make something magical. E.g. fairy,
wizard, witch, princess, prince
Rationale: This experience gives children the opportunity to show their
knowledge of shapes (as we would have discussed with them in the previous
experience discussion about shapes) and apply it to creative arts. By
encouraging them to create their interpretation of something magical will
also continue the fantasy theme of the project.
Outcomes (what I want to achieve): Through this experience we are trying to
consolidate their mathematical learning of shapes by linking it to their interests
of creative arts whilst also continuing with the theme of the project.
This experience will showcase what Zach and Zali understand about basic
shapes and those shapes features. (O5.4). This experience will also show their
ability to apply their knowledge of shapes using creative arts to create a
magical artwork. (O4.4)
Strategies:
Scaffold childrens learning by suggesting things the children can make
e.g. fairy, prince, princess, witch, wizard (intentional teaching)
Encourage children to talk about what they could make out of the
shapes and why different shapes represent different things e.g. to make
a person the circle could be the rounded shape to represent
their head. (intentional teaching)
Strategy to have
Resources:
A table outside (the outdoor environment for inspiration) and
4 chairs
Have the table away from the rest of the childrens play so
that the activity can be run with minimal disruption and
distraction for the children to fully participate

A glue stick for each child to glue their shapes on to their piece of paper
Evaluation
I was really happy with the small set up of the experience. The activity worked
really well being away from the rest of the group and also with only

Both Zach and Zali were able to use the shapes to create something.

Future Implications
Ask the children to draw the shapes themselves pointing out the
discussed features of each shape
Introduce and discuss more difficult shapes e.g. oval, trapezium,
diamond
