3 Mini Paintings
First choose a subject matter. You may
choose to work from life or work from a
photograph. Once you decide what to paint,
create 3 miniature paintings using watercolors.
Each painting should be of the same subject but in
three different compositions. When you are
finished with painting, evaluate your final
compositions and rate them from best to worst.
Justify your answer through a short written
response. Tape your response to the back of your
paintings when you turn them in.
How will you be graded?
The paintings were carefully done, compositional
elements were thought out, the student wrote a
short written response rating their compositions.

Choice 2
Dictionary Illustration
Start by paging though an old
dictionary. You can find a dictionary on
the menu shelf. Carefully cut out a page
from the dictionary with an exacto knife.
Choose one word on the page you
selected and illustrate that word using
colored pencil, pen and/or paint. Fill the
entire page with designs and illustrations.
For ideas check out the PowerPoint on
canvas.
How will you be graded?
Time was spent creating an engaging
illustration, the composition includes
design elements such as emphasis,
movement, and variety, 60% of the page
is filled with illustrations.

Monochromatic Scene
Find a photograph of a space,
place, or landscape. Using either
colored pencil or watercolor, create a
monochromatic drawing or painting.
Choose a color that conveys a certain
message, mood, or emotion you may
want to evoke. Focus on different
shades of value, I would like to see a
gradation of at least 5 values. It may
be helpful to work from a black and
white photo. When you are finished
drawing, write a short written
response explaining why you chose
the color you did.
How will you be graded?
Attention to detail, at least 5 different
shades of value, the
drawing/painting looks patiently
done.

Surrealist artwork
Take a few minutes and research
Surrealism, read the definition and look at
images online. Using colored pencils, create a
surrealistic drawing.
To start, make a list of nouns (ex. ice
cream cone, bicycle, umbrella), verbs (ex.
falling, hatching, skating, running), and
adjectives (ex. peaceful, muscular,
checkered). Select one word from each list
and then make a surrealistic composition of
the noun, changing it according to the other
words chosen. (ex. Umbrella hatching
peacefully). This is a good way to brainstorm
if you are stuck and looking for ideas.

How will you be graded?

The students drawing
demonstrates creativity, the
drawing effectively

themes, and/or symbols.

Out of Context
Chose a 1-4 sentence phrase from your
favorite song, book, or movie. Take the
phrase out of context and illustrate a new
meaning for that phrase.
How will you be graded?
creativity, originality, the drawing effectively
communicates subject matter, themes, and/or
symbols.
Look at the example to the right. The
original quote derives from a man saying
goodbye to his family because he thought he
was going to die in the wilderness. However,
illustration makes us believe a couple is
running away together and saying goodbye
to their families.
