To obtain a measure for Volume of the pycometer (vpyc) the following calculation

was done:

V pyc =

density H 2 O

mpwetmpdry

Experimental Data:
Mass pycometer Wet
(g)
Mass pycometer Dry
(g)

20.341
10.487

Density H2O = 0.997 g/ml at 25 C

V pyc =

9.880 cm3

The volume of the membrane placed in the pycometer is related to experimentally

determined data through the equation:

Vmem =Vpyc
Density H 2O at 25 C

Volume of membrane was determined to be: 0.164 cm^3

Length membrane in pycometer : 5.45 cm

Width membrane in pycometer: 2.5 cm
Therefore, Thickness membrane in pycometer: 0.012 cm =l

Relates permeability to the slope of a mass vs. time plot.
Mass vs. time (minutes) were plotted and the slope was used to generate values of
permeance.
Mass vs. time values were plotted the permeance was calculated. The percent error
in the mass versus time slope was taken to be percent error associated with the
permeance. The percent Error in the slope of this plot was taken using Excels
LINEST function. This corresponds to the percent error in the permeance for that
run. This percent error was propagated all the way through to the diffusion
coefficient.

Permeance is related to the Diffusion coefficient through the equation:

P = D*Kd/l
Where l is the thickness of the membrane in cm and Kd is the partition coefficient.
Kd is defined by the equation:
Kd= (The concentration of water in the membrane) / (The concentration of water in
the bag)

The standard error in the permeance was assumed to be
a good representation of all the error associated in this
laboratory experiment.
