Job Description- Elementary School Teacher


Working Conditions- Elementary school teachers work for both public and private schools. They
usually work in classrooms with about 15 to 30 students. Teachers work between 8 and 10
hours a day on weekdays, teaching classes, preparing lessons, grading assignments, and
attending meetings. They work a 9 to 10-month school year, with 2 or 3 months off over the
summer.
Earnings- Starting off elementary school teachers make about 35,000 a year. Experienced
elementary school teachers typically earn $40,000 to $81,000 a year. The national median
salary for elementary teachers is around $53,000 a year.
Education- In the public school system, all elementary and high school teachers have to be
licensed. Teacher education programs are offered at most four year colleges. Programs for
kindergarten and elementary school teachers include courses in the main subject areas youll
teach (math, physical science, social science, music, art, and literature). Teachers do have to
renew their license every now and then.
