Case Study 3
The soup kitchen video displays the efficacy of the leadership program
at Wilson middle school to help students gain a further understanding
of becoming ethical and productive citizens within the community. The
school aims to implement the development of skills and attributes
within students, while also providing a unique opportunity to look at
different aspects of life.
This program creates the ability for multiple possibilities for reflection
within the PS1 course load. Students could use technology to research
another community program and in groups make their own models of
how to help that program. This would also be useful to develop skills
within language in regards to a presentation of their research, as well
as working to implementing it and actually following through with that
program in the future. Teachers and students could apply what they
have learned from the soup kitchen to show their development, and
also analyze key aspects that developed to be used within the new
program of their choosing. Students learn through their social
environment and this project helps to develop a group mentality and
deepen awareness of other individuals needs, which also reflects
Kohlbergs theory of moral development. The easiest way to assess all
aspects of development is to implement a strategy that evaluates
ongoing development of students learning, so implementing a program

that is formative and applies before and after the trip would be the
most beneficial. This could be something like a graffiti wall, or a mini
survey before and after the trip; I find that as long as students are able
to that the trip helped them to develop and learn in some way then it
would be successful.

I find that this daily program is an interesting way to apply high-level

development of metacognitive thinking within students, in a fieldtrip
like environment. It works to get students involved and motivated,
while at the same time helping them develop a number of skills and
positive behaviors that can be applied within their educational
development. I had not thought of ways in which field trips or other
external environments might be able to help students learn within the
classroom in as many ways as I thought before this video. While
fieldtrips are useful I had not thought of using volunteer work as a way
in which to help students learn while also choosing something that
might be able to develop in a cross-curricula application, as well as
emotional and psychological development. Since volunteer work is
something that I highly value this video has helped me to think of new
ways in which to try and educate students. A main goal for myself to
use this program is reflected in the psychological development of
students and the ways in which they may be able to develop through
experiences like this one. It can help to mature students, develop

metacognition, and create a basis for intrinsic motivation; all areas that
are highly important towards student development, but can be hard to
implement within a simple application of the program of studies.

There are many ways in which technology can be applied within this
example, I described earlier how students could use it to research
other programs and make models of other volunteer programs. This
strategy can be applied further by actual trying to implement the
students researched projects in order to help the community through
something the students created. They can use technology to develop
their programs and then create small videos where they describe their
work and create a small sales pitch to be sent to the program and have
it be implemented.
