Theconceptofslopeisverynewforthemajorityofthestudents.Someofthemmayhavebeen
introducedtoitontheprogramALEKS(AssessmentandLEarninginKnowledgeSpaces)thatis
explainedintheCFA.Whenaskedtoexplainwhattheyknowaboutslopeonthepreassessment15
studentsleftitblankorhadthewrongidea.Twostudentsknewexactlywhatslopeisandtwostudents
partiallyknewwhatslopeis.Itwasevidentthatthistopicwascompletelynewtomystudentsandwe
wouldbeginwithlearningaboutslope.

Thislearninggoalalignswithcomprehensionbecausestudentswillbegraspingthemeaningof
slope.Studentsaregoingtocomprehendanddiscussthisnewconceptanddiscoverwaystointerpretthe

leftitblankordiditincorrectly.Twostudentswereabletoidentifytheslopeandyinterceptofthelinear
equationinslopeinterceptform.Allofthelessonswillbeheavilycenteredaroundthislearninggoal
becauseitsextremelyimportantandthestudentswillbeveryoverwhelmedwiththisbrandnewconcept.

Thislearninggoalalignswithtwolevels:applicationandsynthesis.Studentswillbeapplying
whattheyhavelearnedinanewway.Withafoundationalknowledgeofslopeandyintercept,students
willbegintolearnhowtoidentifytheseinlinearequationsinslopeinterceptform.Synthesiswillbe
appliedwhenstudentsgraphlinearequations.
