Give three examples of different processes. (6 marks) b) Consider the tank heating system shown in Figure 1. A liquid enters the tank with a flow rate F; (fi*/min), and a temperature T;, where it is heated with steam (having a flow rate Q, Ib/min). Let F and T be the flow rate and temperature of the stream leaving the tank. The tank is considered to be well stirred, which implies that the temperature of the effluent is equal to the temperature of the liquid in the tank. The control objective of this heater is to keep the effluent temperature T at a desired value. Develop a P&ID tank heating control system to maintain the outlet temperature, T at its set point by using the same figure and summarize how the system works. Then, identify the controlled variable, manipulated variable and disturbance them in the proposed control system. (8 marks) QUESTION 3 (P02, CO3, C02, C5, C3) a) Consider proportional-only control of the stirred-tank heater control system in Figure 3. The temperature is measured by highly accurate thermometer. The temperature transmitter has a span of 50°C. The controller has a gain of 5 while the gain for the control valve is K,= 1.3. A change in V from 10 to 12 volts causes temperature, T to change from 85 to 90°C and the time constant is 12 min. Possible disturbance in this, temperature control is changes in inlet temperature, T,. The dynamic characteristics that relate the inlet temperature to the temperature in the tank are; gain = 1.2, time constant = 10 min and time delay = 4 min. Develop an expression for each transfer function and a complete block diagram for the temperature control scheme, (10 marks) © Hak Cipta Universiti Teknologi MARA, CONFIDENTIAL CONFIDENTIAL, 4 EHIJUN 2014/CPE562 DO F, Ti SCR {+0 Power F,T«—_ Figure 3 Temperature control system for a stirred-tank heater b) A flow control loop, consisting of an orifice in series with the control valve, a differential pressure transmitter, and a controller, is to be designed for a nominal process flow of 160,000 scfh of air. Valve inlet conditions are 150 psig and 60°F, and the outlet pressure is 110 psig. The valve has linear characteristics. Calculate the valve capacity factor, C, for 100% overcapacity.
