Idioms

Ask the students for all the idioms that have been introduced this semester.
(Collect on the board.)
Then have the students practice: have them get together with a partner and
practice how to use all of these idioms. Prepare them that you will pick out
different pairs to present their example of the use of an idiom to the class.
Have different groups present how to use the idioms above. Each group has to

Practice Functions & Topics (20 min.)

Talk about whats important when having a conversation (2 min.):
Dont just list what you have to say. Make a statement and allow your
partner to add to that.
Respond to what your partner had to say and then add some more,
allowing your partner to respond to that.
IMPORTANT: you can correct your partner, if he/she is talking about
the wrong topic. Better to get on the right track, than both of you losing
points for talking about the wrong thing.
If you dont fully understand, ask your classmate to help you
understand!
Review how to do self-introductions as well as finding something they have in
common by asking polite questions.
Activity: Two Lines (rest of classtime min)
Have the format of the midterm exam ready on the board:
Greeting & self-introduction including name, hometown, major, and
finding something they have in common with their partner (small talk).
Use a function in the conversation with their partner.
Line-Up:
Students line up in 2 rows, facing each other.
Provide a function, i.e. make an appointment on the phone. Using the
format for the midterm exam, students have to have a conversation, in
which they use the function, too. They should take turns to ask and
answer. After 3 min. students switch: One line remains as is. The students
of the other line will move on by one student to the right, so everyone has
a new partner.

Midterm Prep

Emphasize that during the exam they need to talk for 2 min. And that they
need to make sure, both partners get an equal share to discuss the
questions.

Q & A (5 min.)

Allow a time for questions and answers. If theres time left students may
practice on their own together with their classmates.
