Preparing for the Unexpected…
If Disaster Strikes:
Remain calm and be patient. Local
emergency agencies are likely over-
whelmed. It may take up to 72 hours for
them to reach you.
Follow advice of local emergency officials
Listen to your radio or TV for news and
instructions
If the disaster occurs near you, check for
injuries, give first aid and get help
Check for in-home damages using a
flashlight. Do not use matches or can-
dles or turn on electrical switches.
Check for fires, hazards and sniff for gas
leaks, starting at the water heater. If you
suspect a leak, get everyone out quickly
and turn off the main gas valve.
Shut off any other damaged utilities
Confine or secure your pets
Call your family contact. Do not use the
telephone again unless it’s a life-
threatening emergency.
Check on your neighbors, especially
those living alone, elderly or disabled.
EMERGENCY CHECKLIST
 Get a QuakeDog survival kit for your home, office
and for the trunk of each car you own.
 Post emergency telephone numbers by phones (fire,
police, ambulance, etc.).
 Teach children how and when to call 911 or your
local Emergency Medical Services number for help.
 Show each family member how and when to turn off Family Preparedness

 Find the safe spots in your home or office for each
type of disaster.
 Get to know your neighbors and what special skills
they may have (Doctor, EMT, Psychiatrist, CERT
