NGSS Lesson Planning Template

From Molecules to
Lesson: Structures and
Organisms
Processes
Brief Lesson Description: The students will be described how leaves help plants live,
grow and produce food.
Performance Expectation(s): Develop models to describe that organisms have unique
and diverse life cycles, but all have in common birth, growth, reproduction, and
death.
Grade/ Grade Band:

Grade 3

Topic:

Specific Learning Outcomes:

The students will be able to identify what plants need to grow.

The students will be able to expect a new vocabulary word.
Narrative / Background Information
Prior Student Knowledge:

The students have considerable knowledge about photosynthesis.

The students have observed the plant growth.
Science & Engineering
Practices:

Disciplinary Core Ideas:

Developing and Using

Models, Modeling in 35
builds on K2 experiences
and progresses to building
and revising simple
models and using models
to represent events and
design solutions. Develop
models to describe
phenomena. (3-LS1-1)

LS1.B: Growth and

Development of
Organisms Reproduction
is essential to the
continued existence of
every kind of organism.
Plants and animals have
unique and diverse life
cycles. (3-LS1-1)

Crosscutting Concepts:

PS2.A: Forces and Motion

Patterns of change can be

used to make predictions.
(3-LS1-1)

Possible Preconceptions/Misconceptions:

Students may think that needle leaf plants do not drop their leaves at all.

LESSON PLAN 5-E Model

ENGAGE: Opening Activity Access Prior Learning / Stimulate Interest / Generate Questions:

The teacher will give the students a paper KWL to identify what they know before
about how do plant use leaves to make food, and what they want to know about this
topic. Then what they learned.
Instruction activity:
I give each group a paper.
You have 3 sections.
The first section is K, that mean you should write what already know about,
how do plants use leaves to make food.
The second section is W, that mean you should write what do we want to
know about how do plants use leaves to make food.
The third section is L, that at the end of the lesson we should write what we
learned.

EXPLORE: Lesson Description Materials Needed / Probing or Clarifying Questions:

The teacher shows the students a Bromeliad plant and then ask students some
question:
What color is a Bromeliad plant?
How does a Bromeliad grow?
How do we use a Bromeliad?
What season do we associate with Bromeliad?
EXPLAIN: Concepts Explained and Vocabulary Defined:

The teacher shows the students a video how do plants use leaves to make
food.

ELABORATE: Applications and Extensions:

The teacher asks the students to answer the questions on the book.
EVALUATE:

At the end of the lesson, the teacher gives the students a small exam to review the
lesson and make sure that the students understand the lesson.
