Egyptian Kingdom

History
Egypt was settled in 3500 B.C. in Nile Valley
The Pyramids of Giza were built in 2600 B.C.
The old kingdom existed from 2700 B.C. through 2200
B.C.
The new kingdom existed 1500 B.C. through 1100 B.C.
In 1517 B.C. Egypt was ruled by the Ottoman Empire

Geography

located in Northeastern Africa


hottest months are May-Oct
coolest months are Oct-May
hot/dry throughout country
winter is mild with some rain

Government
Depended on pharaoh
Was a united kingdom with a single leader
The government established the economic system
Pharaoh controlled the economic system
The nobles were powerful people who were related
to the pharaoh or other important people. They
oversaw the land and the peasants that worked
the land. They were powerful in the government.

Economics
Ancient Egyptian wealth came mostly from agriculture
The economy was a partial command economy, and had
some aspects of free market
Egyptians produced most of their belongings themselves
Mining was also done, but the metals were not in common
circulation
Most of Egypts economy was made from domestic trade in
markets. Egypt didnt do much foreign trade, but new items
were introduced into the market from foreign countries that
Egypt overtook in war.

Archaeology
Pyramids: Slaves built big stone pyramids for the
Pharaoh to be buried in after he died. The
pyramids were made to represent a temple for the
Gods.
Sphinx: A huge stone cat with the head of a king, it
symbolized wisdom and strength
Tomb: Made for the Pharaoh after he died, he was
placed under a pyramid as an access to afterlife.

Anthropology
religion- work with gods to prevent recurrence
ancient Egyptians buried their dead in small pits in the
desert.
dryness of the sand dehydrated the bodies creating natural
mummies
used coffins to protect themselves from animals
the bodies are wrapped in strips of linen

Sociology
Ancient Egyptians interacted with foreign groups when they invaded
other countries or were invaded themselves.
Ancient Egypt was occupied by many countries such as Rome and
the Ottoman Empire
Within society, there were several social classes: peasants, the
commonwealth, upper class, and the nobility, which included the
pharaoh.

Psychology
Soaring unemployment
increase in crime
fuel shortages
rising cost of food
women facing sexual violence
