Our handbook has pertinent information about our class with outlined

expectations, our class schedule, curriculum information and many other

miscellaneous pieces of information you might find handy!

Classroom Expectations and Behavior Guidelines

On the first day of school, as a class, we talked about behavior as a whole. We
talked about what it looks like and sounds like and practiced making thumbs up
choices. We also talked about what the teacher expects from each individual and
the purpose behind doing these actions.

Looking eyes
Listening ears
Sitting manners
Quiet voices
Walking feet
Helping hands

While going over these expectations, we put in place a Positive Reinforcement

Behavior Chart. The chart is to put in place a positive behavior system. Every child
starts the day on green which is Ready to Learn. They have the opportunity to
earn their clips to be moved up or down according to their behavior. As the child
moves their clip in either direction, it is a teaching opportunity for us to reteach
behaviors or encourage the ultimate best behavior.
*This Positive Behavior Chart is located throughout the school and is used
consistently.
With this chart there is also a Secret Student of the day. I have a secret container
on the board and every morning I will place a students name inside of it. Im the
only one that knows whose name is in the container. This will hopefully encourage
each student to have outstanding behavior every day. At the end of the day I will
open the container, and check the behavior chart. If that secret student stayed on

green or moved up throughout the day, they will be revealed and get to take home
the secret student ticket! If they needed more reminders about their behavior
throughout the day, then the name will not be revealed and we start over the next
day.
Everyday Math
1st Grade
Monday-Thursday the students will be assigned math home links or a game, which
is usually a little something to practice their understanding of their knowledge.
Also, look for Family Letters at the beginning of each unit. The answers to their
homework are on this letter so this may help in checking your childs work.
Treasures Reading
In class throughout every day we will be learning concepts such as phonological
awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, high frequency words, spelling,
comprehension, writing, workstations, listening/speaking/viewing and research
process. Most all of this work will be done and practiced at school. The two major
areas that will be focused and practiced at home will be spelling and nightly reading
at home. Kindergarteners will not have spelling homework.
At the beginning of Kindergarten and 1st grade it is acceptable for children to do a
combination of reading independently and having an adult read aloud to them. We
will be sending home high frequency books with them. We ask that they read these
books, as practice, to a family member. For some children, these books may be
easy, but I tell them that they are good practice for their fluency. Please encourage
them to read whenever possible.
Kindergarten Homework
Within the next few weeks, I will be sending home weekly homework sheets with
directions on them. You will get these in their homework folders on Monday and will
return them completed on Fridays. This is an opportunity for your child to show
their learning to you and to practice our weekly skills in math and literacy. Please
sign after each night to show that youve checked their work. If you have questions,
concerns or and notes please write in the space given.
Science
In science, the students will be making new discoveries, while studying
1. Materials in Our World
2. Plants
3. Trees and Weather

We will also have our guest Mr. Fulbright, our Science Guy two times throughout
the month.
Social Studies
In social studies we will be studying:
Me and My World
This is with our program Social Studies Alive!
Thursday Folders
The school sends important notes home on Thursdays in the folder. Please sign the
back and return to school the next day. I will also be returning graded class work
papers and assessments in this folder. Please review your childs work and contact
me with any questions.
Student Progress and Parent Conferences
I welcome you to call or stop by anytime if you would like to discuss your childs
progress in school. I am always available to help you and your child set goals for
success. We will be holding official conferences at the end of end of
September/beginning of October. A letter will be sent home with your child,
notifying you of your day and time.
Birthday Parties
If you would like to celebrate your childs day here at school, we ask that you bring
in a healthy treat ex: fruit/or veggies. I encourage you to email me with a day and
time for this celebration so I can plan accordingly. I can always provide a healthy
activity for birthdays as well. Any snacks/celebrations are completely
optional.
Everyday Snack
Every morning we will provide a light, healthy breakfast for your child in the
lunchroom. We still ask that your child has a breakfast at home. I also ask that you
provide your child with a healthy snack for the morning of each day. We will then
have a group snack in the afternoon that I will provide from your community
contribution. Updated donations of dry snacks are greatly appreciated. If youd
rather pack your child an afternoon snack for them to have that is welcomed.

Open Door
A reminder that my door is always open to questions or concerns. Please let me
know if I can provide you with more information about anything in this handbook or

curriculum. You may email me or call me at the number on the front of the
handbook.
