Move to Tijuana at the age of ten because his father died in the
coal mines and he personally didnt cared about moving from
Guanajuato to Tijuana.

0:55

Lalo: I went from Guanajuato to Mexico City then I went with a man
who was friends of my mom and traveled from train to T.J

7:33

David: So how old were you when you moved to

1:17

Lalo:T.J?
David: No, L.A
Lalo: Well it was 1955.
David: So you were 20?
Lalo: A bit older
David: 25?
Lalo:More
David: 30?
Lalo:Yes
In 1955 He got his passport and live in L.A for 15 year.

1:18

I arrive there I lived with my Aunt from my Dad that I never knew

14:07

and I suffered a lot there because she had her ways two. I lived
there for a while and my cousins helped my find a job. She never
allowed me to snack on food because she always says that we
already ate, why eat more?
Lalo:I left my aunts house a little bit later and moved to an
apartment at a hotel. Thats why tell people that I suffered a lot
there was times I that I didnt even ate but I always paid for the
rent every 8 days.

14:32

I went back to T.J when my mother died and I decide to stay there
but work on in the U.S.

17:17

David: So what about my grandma, I know you knew her as a

young age but what happened with you and her.
Lalo: She had a boyfriend and I told that im going to arrive at this
date and that I dont want you with a boyfriend and when I arrived
she had no boyfriend. She was my childhood sweetheart and since
I was forced to marry another girl and I was also dating your
grandma.
Lalo:I knew your grandma since 1950s, I still didnt havent moved
to L.A and met her in parties. I went to a lot of parties since I didnt
like going to school and focused most of my time parting. At that
time T.J was a party place where all the soldiers went to part

3:20

Lalo:My brother was a barber and he taught to shine people's

shoes and cut their hair. He got all the shoe shiners and made me
give them haircuts. My brother was so strict that he made me cut
their hair with scissors. He also hit me if they moved and made me
messed up their haircuts.

5:22

Lalo: One time my brother got me angry since he slapped me, so I

got the knife I have upstair and I pulled out the knife and told him
in mid tears You know what brother I had. I made my brother cry
and since then he started respecting me ever since, I did it
because I was tired of him treating me that way and since I lived
with him never let me do anything.

27:11

Lalo: I started joining the pachucos. I joined a gang were we

pachucos but if two people from opposing gangs got in a fight no
one would join since its a fight between two people but if someone
else joined then everyone else would get in the fight and it would

9:45

be a disaster.
David: You ever got in a fight with someone?
Lalo: Yes many times, I would shank them. The knife I have upstairs
is the same knife ive used for 50 years.
David: Did you use that knife?
Lalo: Yes, I would poke them with it and beat them with it.
Lalo:We always had guns in our side and people respected us.

11:19

David: Do you think things changed from then to today?

Lalo: Yes, now a days you can drive by and kill someone with a
machine gun.
Lalo: That's why I always tell kids to focus on education keep on
learning.

24:53

Lalo: Many people leave school and work at Mcdonalds and other
fast food restaurants.

30:10

David: Or other times they start going to down a path of drugs just
like when you were young.
Lalo: Yeah they get addicted to drugs but they always start with a
friend telling them to do it, Im saying it from experience. That's
why school is where it mostly starts.
Lalo: Ive been to a lot in the A.A meeting, like I said I havent been
drinking for 36 years and I go to the A.A meetings and share my
experience I talk to them smoothly but then I talk to them one by
one and tell them the hard truth.

31:00

Lalo: I had money, I had many things in life and I didnt cared about 35:45
anything raised without any family love.
David: out of all the things you had what was the best one
Lalo:Everything, I appreciate all of even the bad things, sure I

complained about the bad things in life that I did, sometimes I even
walked into it. When you're alone or leave in a hotel I started
dating ladies but not for love. I always worked in LA I had to in
order to pay rent and eat food, I left my aunts house because it
wasnt convenient for example here after I eat I can get a banana
but over there I couldnt. In that house I slept in the basement
where there was dirt and it was messy.
Lalo:My life has had all suffering,torture..
David: Happiness?
Lalo: I never complained about my life yes I suffered but all of that
has help me. Thats why Im thankful that you and your sister have
a mom and dad, all of the kids that have parents, it's a beautiful
thing to see them with their family. You should be thankful to have
parents and relatives since I only had a brother that beat me up.
