Course Description
This advanced level breadth course is a critical assessment of the post-war events and influences that shaped modern North American
society. Students will analyze how and why counter-culture challenges were incorporated into main stream society and the current backlash
to that. The course will examine several social movements and schools of thought as they developed and impacted our society.

Successful completion of this course will enable the student to:

Analyze how the Vietnam War impacted North American culture and how it was different in the US, Canada and Mexico

Analyze the development of diplomatic relations between the US and Canada through NAFTA and NORAD

Explore how war has changed North American society specifically the impact of the Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan wars
Assess how some of the major political issues from 1945 to the present, impacted the past and still impacts us today

Examine free trade across USA, Canada and Mexico since 1945

Explore the role of unions, labor politics and radical movements since 1945

Assess how class, labour and capitalism have impacted economic development in North America since 1945

Analyze how family, migration, war, paid and unpaid labour have all changed North America since 1945

Explore the concepts of civil liberties and human rights and how they have changed since 1945

Consider how ethnic groups and mobility have impacted the development of cities and law enforcement in the US, Canada and

The minimum passing grade for this course is 60 (C).
