Teaching Philosophy
I believe that the classroom should represent a community built on strong and individualized
relationships within and outside of the classroom. The classroom as a community will ensure that
students feel supported and a have sense of belonging. As such, the children are comfortable
yet challenged to take risks. The classroom community also encourages diversity and respects
individuality. A successful classroom community promotes positive social skills and academic achievement where children learn how to participate in the class and work collaboratively. I believe the
learning environment that resembles a community will aid children in becoming effective citizens
who contribute to society in a positive way.
At the core of my teaching philosophy is an enthusiasm for the Arts - especially music. Integrating
the Arts into other areas of the curriculum exposes students to a different perspective and can
provide a deeper and rich learning experience which encourages higher order thinking such as
creativity.
I am motivated to provide differentiated teaching and learning to students. Classrooms are
naturally diverse places and teaching must be responsive to the learners needs by capitalizing on
their strengths and interests in a way that challenges them and encourages growth in areas of
weakness.
I am a firm believer that the students learning has to have relevance for them and as such, building
strong relationships with children and making connections to their lives is vital. Students need to
learn through addressing real life issues which are rarely confined to one curriculum area. As such, I
aim to incorporate a relevant and integrated curriculum into my teaching practice.
