Overview

OnTuesday,November4thwastheseventhweekinTigerPride.Theunitfocuswason
TrackandField.TuesdayandThursdayIhad204th/5thgradestudentspracticingtheirendurance
runningrelayracing.Thelessontookplaceontheblacktopandtherunningcoursewasset
aroundallthebasketballcourtswithconesastheboundaries.Forthislessontheonlyequipment
IneededwerepopsiclesticksandconesforTuesday.FortheThursdaylessonIneededcones,
hulahoops,minihurdles,andbatons.Bothlessonplansstartedwithadynamicwarmuptoget
themusclewarmandloosewithlunges,highknees,marchingskips,andarmswings.Students
wereabletopicktheirownpartnerswhotheythoughthadthesamefitnesslevelasthem.Allthe
studentsparticipatedinthelesson.

StudentLearningOutcomes
Mystudentlearningobjectiveswereasfollows:Psychomotor (P): Students will be able
to use proper running form and demonstrate proper breathing techniques to keeping the heart
rate elevated 70% of the time when participating in a relay/obstacle race. SWBAT demonstrate
the COTS for the standing long jump and the modified shot put 80 % of the time. Through this
stage the teacher will be able to analyze the level of the students physical abilities at each
station.ForCognitive (C): Students will be able to correct their classmates on their technique
with 70% accuracy. The students will understand the lifetime benefits of fitness. The students
will understand the importance of target heart rate. The students will understand the difference
between aerobic and anaerobic exercise. For health- Related Fitness (H): Students will be
engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity at least 70% of the time. From the data
collected from my evaluation team, I had 1260 seconds of MVPA, which is equivalent to 21

minutes. On the time analysis sheet, I had 18 minutes recorded for activity, 9 minutes of
instruction, and 4 minutes of management. When students are in stations, they are able to
practice everything they have learned in the week.
QualityLearningEnvironment
Thisweek,ItaughtendurancerunningonTuesdayandareviewoftheunitonThursday.
AllthestudentswereactivelyparticipatinginthelessonandIfeltthatIachievedthefourcriteria
foralearningexperience.OnTuesday,myinstantactivitywasadynamicwarmup.Thepurpose
ofthewarmupistogettheirmusclesactivatedandwarmedupandgetreadyforstudentsto
engageinthelesson.ThelessononTuesdaywastoworkontheirrunningformtoimprovetheir
endurance.Ihadthestudentsrunaroundagridinpairsforanallottedtime.Everylapthey
completedtheycollectedapopsiclestick.Intheendtheygroupscouldcountandseehowmany
laps theycompleted.Inmylesson,ifthestudents ran16laps,itwas equivalentto1mile.
Majorityofthegroupscompleted12laps.Thislessonwasnoteasyandrequiredthestudentsto
worktogetherandpusheachothertokeepongoing.ForThursdaylesson,itwasdesignedforall
thestudentstorunthroughallthetrackandfieldeventslearnedthisweek.Thefourstations
included:sprintingrelay,standinglongjump,endurancerunningfortime,andamodifiedshot
put.ThisweekIwasabletoincludemyETsbyassigningeachpersontohelpoutwithastation.
IenjoyhavingalessonwithstationsbecauseIamabletowalkaroundtheclassandobserve.The
studentsseemtoalsoenjoyitbecausetheygettopracticedifferentskillsforashortamountof
time.Forthislesson,Ihad18minutesofactivity,9minutesofinstruction,and3minutesof
managementformy30minutelesson.MyinstructiontimewasactuallyhigherthanIexpected.
Ihadtodemonstrateandwalkthrougheachstationforthestudentsbecausetheywereallvery

technical.Ichosestudents todemonstrateeachstationas well,otherwisetheywouldallbe


confused.Iwasveryexcitedtoseehowallthestudentswereparticipatingineachstation.Even
withtheendurancerunning,allthestudentswerecontinuingtowalkaroundtheperimeterifthey
werenotabletorunthewholetime.Eachstationlasted45minuteskeepingtheirheartrates
elevated.Thestudentsseemedtoreallyenjoyallthestations.Ithinktheyenjoyedthesprinting
relaystationthemostwiththebatons.Themanagementinthislessonwasduringthetransitions
fromstationtostationandtellingstudentswhattodoorwheretogo.Ihadmanystudents
missingfromclasswhichmadeitmoredifficulttoassignkidsinagroup.LuckilyIhadmyETs
tohelpmeexplainandorganizethestudentswhentheygottotheirstation.Iknewthestations
weregoingtotakelongerthanususal,Ididnothaveaninstantactivityandusedthattimeto
explainthestationareas.Itwasveryapparentwhichstationthestudentsenjoyedandwhichone
theydidnotwanttoparticipatein.Theydidnotseemtoenjoythestandinglongjump.Isaw
somestudentssitoutafterafewtimes.
Strengths&WeaknessesinPedagogicalskillset
Duringthisweeklesson,IdidnothavemuchmovementonTuesdaylessonbecauseI
washandingoutPopsiclestickstothestudentsastheyranalap.OnThursdayslesson,Ihada
tonofmovement.Iwasabletowalkaroundstationtostationwatchingthestudentsperform
theirskillandgivethemfeedback.AtsomeofthestationsIwasabletoactivelyparticipatein
withthestudentssuchasrunningalaportwointheendurancerunningorpracticingthestanding
longjumpwiththekids.Ishouldhavedonesomethingdifferentlywiththemodifiedshotput
areabecauseoncetheballwasthrownitkeptrollingtotheendoftheblacktop.Istillcontinueto

sayperfect,awesome,andokaymultipletimeswhenwatchingthevideo.Mostofmyfeedback
wastoindividualstoguidethemtoimprovetheirskilldevelopment.
TheCOTSwerefairlysimpleandeasytoteachthestudentssincethemostimportant
aspectisthearmsandbreathing.IhadthemgothroughthemotionsasIwasexplainingittothe
class.Whengivinginstructions,Icouldtellmanystudentswerenotinterestedandhadtheireyes
wonderingallovertheplacereadytobeginthelesson.Itoldthestudentsatthebeginningnotto
sprintattheverybeginningandtrynottowalk.Clearly,theydidnotlistenandwereexhausted
afterlapone.Ichallengedthestudentstocomplete16laps(collect16popsiclesticks)andthat
wouldbeequivalenttoonemile.OnThursdaylessonwasallabouthavingfun,encouragingeach
otherandstayingactivethewholetime
BeforeTigerPridestarted,Ihadallthestationssetup.Ipresettherunningareainhe
middle,shotputononeside,sandinglongjumpontheothersideandonthefurthestendwere
thesprintingrelays.OnTuesdaytheinstantactivitywasadynamicwarmupwhichrequiredno
equipment. This week,Iwouldsayoneofmystrengths wasactivelyparticipatingwiththe
studentsandtalkingtostudentsindividually.Iwascheeringthestudentsonandgivingthemhigh
fivesastheywerepracticingtheirskills.
Recommendationsfornextsession
FornextweeklessonIwillbeteachingbadminton.Iamgoingtocontinuetoworkonmy
lessonplan,organization,andtransitions andshortenmyinstruction. Itisimportantfornext
weeklessonIusemyspacewiselyandgooveralltherulesandexpectationstoavoidinjury.I
needtomakesuretoaskthestudentsquestionsandcheckforunderstanding.Iwouldliketohave
hardlyanymanagementandhalftheamountofinstructionfornextweek.Istilltendtocatch

myselfteachingsayingthesameidiosyncrasies;needtousemoreofavarietyofwordsinsteadof
okay,perfect,andgreat.Mystudentsarebecomingmoreskilledandbecomingmoreactivein
thelessons.Onlyafewmoreweekswiththesekids.
