Lesson Duration: 50min

Subject: Science
Year Level: 9
Class Size: 25
Resources and Materials: Laptops
Topic: Chemical reaction to degrade or neutralize
Learning Outcomes/Aims:

Able to predict the consequence of combining 2 chemicals using the chemical formula given.

Understanding the effect of chemical reaction caused by pollution to everyday life.

Able to associate the manipulation of quantity and concentration of chemical to the effect of chemical
action.
Activities

Time Frame

Introduction
2 min
Students will be using an experiment and class discussion to counter the effect of acid to the
environments as well as investigate the problems associated with the stability of plastic
molecules.

Body
Explain:
5 min
This class will be based around experiments and discussions. Students will be required to
conduct the experiments and answer the related discussion questions. The lesson will draw on
acid rain and the rise of oceanic acidity to talk about neutralisation reactions. The discussion
from the experiment will lead into the class discussion on the effect of plastic which is super
stable and would be less likely to react with other chemicals in a natural setting and its effect
on the planet.

Elaborate: The experiment is intended to get students to use the descriptive language they
have been learning to describe the shape of the salt crystal as well as rational to the procedural
methods taken to do the experiment. Students will also be required to write up the equation of
the reaction which was learned in past lessons. Students should be able to conclude that having
a super reactive chemical such as acids and base as well as super stable chemicals such as
plastic in large quantities would be detrimental to the environment.

Formative Assessment:
Experiment: Neutralisation reactions
By completing the experiment, students will learn to associate the need for certain procedures
to possible errors caused chemical reaction. There will be extra discussion questions for the
experiment such as:

Why do we need to neutralize chemicals?

Does an only reactive chemical pose a threat?

Can materials which are too stable cause harm to the environment?
20 min

Discussion
Patterns exist in almost everything we see. If we keep producing and dumping undegradable
plastic, we will consistently get the same outcome pattern, which is more pollution.
