Step-by-Step Plan
SS.3.C.2.1
Identify group and individual actions of citizens that demonstrate civility, cooperation,
volunteerism, and other civic virtues.
Students will understand the reason Veterans Day is celebrated.
Students will demonstrate civility by actively engaging in the lesson and writing
the note to a local veteran.
Students will make connections between Veterans, Veterans Day, and the name of
their school.
I will be looking for higher level thinking in these students on what Veterans Day means
to them. In order to evaluate this I will orally ask the students higher order thinking
questions and note responses.
I will also have the students write a note to a local veteran in the community; this allows
me to assess both their writing and also their ideals of civility before these are given to
Baldomero Lopez State Veterans Nursing Home.

1. Key Points to talk about; Veterans are people who fought for
mins

the continued freedom of the United states, these important
or
people sacrifice time and sometimes their lives by fighting to
Students)?
keep us all safe, they are mothers, father, grandmother,
Both
grandfathers, and great people in the community. We
celebrate Veterans Day because we wish to show these
people our thanks for their sacrifices.
2. After I talk about these few key points I will ask some higher
order thinking question in discussions for the students to
make connections; Based on the nation celebrating Veterans
Day what can you infer about why your school is named after
Veterans? (Analyzing), What do you think is the value of
thanking a veteran? (Evaluating). This will then lead into the
note activity.
3. See Attached Example interactive note book page.

1. After the last two sections are completed I will then tell the
students since now they understand the holiday and what it
means to be a veteran they will write a note using the card
stock I have given them to write a note to a local Veteran.
2. I will give the students options to write the note on; what
does Veterans Day means to you? , thank the veteran for
their service, or tell the Veteran about what you learned
today.
3. I will float around the room answering questions and guiding
student thinking while they write the letter.
I fell that by simply having this discussion for civility, and the importance of thanking
those who have put their lives on the line, through this Holiday it meets the needs and
their curiosity at the subject. It also keeps the students interesting in working in the
community which not only benefit them but other people in the community as well.
There will be very little differentiation for this lesson. The only thing I would do to
differentiate this would be to guide some the lower students thinking while they are
writing.
