proved that it would be a

Battle of Antietam:
September 17
1862 Northern
victory, first battle
on Northern soil.
Gave Lincoln a
boost in his
approval rating
22,000 casualties

December 13 1862
Battle of Fredericksburg
this battle contained
over 200000 soldiers
Confederate victory
13,000 casualties
restored Confederate
morale but would lead
to northern
frustrations, new
appointment of
General Burnside,

Second Battle of
Bull Run Manassas
Virginia 1862 with a
Confederate victory.
Would lead to the
dismissal of general
John Pope, and the
promotion of
McClellan along
with a north
movement of the
Confederate army.

Battle of Shiloh April 6, 7


1862, a Union Victory
pushing the Confederates
back and there was 23000
casualties. Also there was
a total of 62000 were
killed wounded and
missing. This was
important because it
would prove to both sides
that the war would be
long and costly.

Battle of Chattanooga
November 23 25 1863
results from a
Confederate victory in
Chickamauga which
placed Union soldiers at
a railroad junction.
Forced the
Confederates back from
Georgia, this was
important because it
would enable Sherman
to go and destroy the
infrastructure in
Georgia.

Shermans March
November 15 to December
21 1864 285 troops from
Atlanta to Savannah
Georgia, important
strategy to lower the
morale by destroying the
land and taking provisions,
Atlanta was the industrial
center of the Confederacy

July 1-3 1863 The


Battle of
Gettysburg Lee
was forced to
withdraw on July
4th After Lincoln
would make his
Gettysburg address
51000 casualties,
Lee offered
resignation to
President Davis

April 9 1865, at the


Appomattox
Courthouse Virginia
Lee surrenders, and
him and his soldiers
were pardoned and
allowed to keep their
side arms.
