Description of Activities and Setting

I will start the lesson with a small review on what they
covered the week before. Lets talk about what we discussed
last week. So last week we talked about a couple different
things like rules versus laws and different things in the
community. Can anyone tell me one rule or law that you
remembered from last week? I will give the students time to
answer the question and give their examples. Those are
great examples. Now what about different things in the
community? Can anyone name something that we said was in
our community? Once the students have answered the
question I will transition into our main focus. One of the main
things in our community is citizens. Can anyone tell me what
a citizen is? I will give the students time to answer the
question. Citizens are member of a place. We are all actually
citizens.
Now that we know what a citizen is we are going to talk about
things that makes a good citizen in our community.
As citizens it is important that we take care of our
community. Lets take a look at some pictures of some citizens
contributing to their community. I will show a small slide
show of pictures of different people helping out in the
community. The slide show will be a mixture of historians and
everyday citizens. Each slide I will mention what they are

doing to take care of their community and how they are being
good citizens. I will ask them questions like Can anyone
name one thing that you remembered from the slide that
made them a good citizen? Have you done any of the things
that youve seen in the slide show or do you know anyone
that has done something similar from the pictures youve
seen? Now that youve seen the slide show is there anything
you would like to do that youve seen in the slideshow?
Students will return to their table groups to discuss how to be
a good citizen. The students will take out one piece of paper
and as a group they will brain storm different ideas of how to
be a good citizen. One person in the group will write down the
different ideas of their group. Now that we have discuss
different people that show how to be a good citizen I want you
to discuss with your table members how to be a good citizen.
One person in the group can write down a couple examples
10mins
that you have shared. When we are done we are going to
share one example you came up with as a group. The
students will have 5 minutes to come up with an example to
share with the class. The teacher will walk around and hear
the discussion that the students are having. The teacher will
also ask questions to encourage discussion. After the 5
minutes we go around to each table and let them share with
the whole class what they discussed.
After we have discussed the different example of being a good
citizen we will create an American Flag with each students
own example of what they think a good citizen is. They will be
working independently on this task and come up with their
own personal example. They will come up with an example of
how to be a good citizen, trace their hand on a red piece of
paper, and write their example in the middle of the paper.
Now that we have come up with examples as I group I want
15mins
to see what you think it means to be a good citizen in your
community. We will be creating a class flag with your
examples of being a good citizen. Students will have 3-5
minutes to figure out what they want to write before they are
given their red piece of paper to trace their hand. I will come
and check their answers before they are able to get their red
paper.
Students will explain what they think it means to be a good citizen. They
must create the hand print with one example of how to be a good
citizen, share it with the class, and post it to the American flag created
by the teacher.

7. Closure

After everyone is done with their example and they created

their handprint, we will come together as a class and have
everyone one by one share their example. After they share
their example they will come up and tape their handprint on
the flag. When everyone has shared their example we will
discuss the common examples that we see on our flag. What
are some common examples we see on our flag? Are there
any things that you want do to give back to your community?
How can we be good citizens in our classroom?

Modifications/Accommodations:
For my students who are ELL I will make sure they
have a partner that can help them with some of
the words. If they need help presenting their
handprint to the class, I will read it for them. I will
also leave the slide show on the board so they can
reference back to the pictures we talked about in
the beginning.
