Letter of Reference

Name of candidate: Roger Horton

Position covered by letter: Biology, Science, Math Teacher
Period covered by letter: August 1991 June 2009
School at which candidate was observed: American School of Dubai (ASD)

It is a pleasure for me to write a letter of recommendation for Roger Horton. During the time
period covered by this reference I had the opportunity to observe and work with Roger in two separate
locations. The first was the American School of Dubai (ASD) which during Rogers time grew from a
relatively small school (300 students in grades K-9) into a moderately sized K-12 school of 950 students
by the time Roger left. At ASD Roger was specifically employed to assist the school with its expansion
from a K-9 into a K-12 school. During the first few years Roger taught Biology as well as other science
and math courses as the new high school program was evolving. Additionally he assisted with many
after school activities, mostly athletic, to provide the students with a comprehensive, well-rounded
program. In this school I was the superintendent from Rogers arrival through June of 2005.
In the second school located in, Sohar, Oman, Roger was one of the first employees hired to
establish a totally new school. In this position, as well, Roger stepped out of his major area of expertise
(Biology) to teach a variety of science and math courses as well as to assist with extracurricular
activities and with the general establishment of a new school. In this school I was the Contract Executive
in charge of overseeing the establishment of the school. Roger excelled with his work in both of these
schools.
As a teacher of Biology, Roger is exceptional. His students love his courses and they achieve
extremely well. The results of his students on the Advanced Placement Biology exams have always been
exceptional. He cares for the students, relates well with them, puts in extra time when needed by the
students and always lets the students know that he will do whatever it takes to assist them to achieve
well. Roger does extremely well with the other math and science courses, but most of my experience
with him was with his teaching of Biology.
With regard to extracurricular activities, Roger recognizes these activities as a necessary
extension of a students school experience. His activities are well organized and run. The students not
only learn the skills of the activity but also collaboration and team building skills that are so essential for
students while in school as well as for their future.
With the start-up school in Oman, Roger stepped in where ever necessary to assist with the
school development. Whether it was helping to organize housing for the faculty, purchase items for the
school or establish procedures and routines for the students and teachers, Roger was a willing and
talented volunteer. His efforts in this regard were greatly appreciated by the head of the school as well as
by me.

Roger has high standards and principles and is an excellent role model for students. He relates
well with students, peers, administrators and with parents. Roger has performed extremely well in the
two positions which I have mentioned and I am certain will continue to do so in any position which he
may accept in the future. I strongly encourage any organization to consider Roger for employment in
any position which can benefit from his exceptional skills and work ethic.
Sincerely,

Roger G. Hove
