Theories

Vygotsky
Social interaction is key in the developmental learning of
the students.
Zone of Proximal Development
Gardners Multiple Intelligences Theory
Not every one student learns the same way.
We as educators must get to know our students in order
to differentiate our lessons in order to have a more broad
range of learning methods.
Krashen
Input: Using the formula i+n allows for teaching the
students one level higher than what their competency
level is already.
Affective: stresses affect ones ability to learn

An Environment that
Supports Healthy
Development

My Philosophy
Students will be able to walk into a classroom and

have a feeling of safety, acceptance and comfort

conducive to a learning environment. The classroom
will feel as if it is a home away from home.
Students at the Secondary level are also physically
developing as well as mentally. Making note of this,
the way the classroom is organized will allow for
kinesthetic movement and flexibility throughout.

Strategies to Use
The teacher and their room create a positive environment

for the students. The teacher is able to do this by creating

strong relationships with the students (finding out their
interests, backgrounds etc.) and showing that they care for
the students as individual adults.
There should also be decorations (posters, pictures etc.)
that engage and peak pique the students interests so the
walls are not bare.
Organize the classroom in a semi-circle so that movement
is possible. Students are also able to get up and move to
other parts of the room for group work and/or discussion.

An Environment that
Supports Engagement and
the Development of Critical
Thinking

Rationale
The students need to be engaged in all the different

mediums that are being used within the classroom.

This could mean the incorporation of technology at
times or just simple group discussion. This is also
another example of how differentiated learning can
be effective. Cell phones are one of the technologies
that should be prohibited within the classroom
because of their disturbance and distraction away
from the students ability to be engaged.

Strategies to Use

Incorporating technology into the classroom is

something that is inevitable in this time. Monitoring or

using school oriented sites such as EdModo helps keep
the students on track with assignments and their
schedule.
Make sure to have a limited amount of technology use time

in class and do not allow the use cellphones as they are

found to be distracting to the student and others around
them.
Have the students use their technologies outside of the
class and then incorporate what that was they had to do for
an in-class discussion.

The use of stations throughout the lesson is a way to

create a differentiated lesson, use different mediums and

have the students engaged and up moving around
throughout the classroom.

An Environment that
Supports Engagement and
Risk Taking

My Philosophy
As a teacher I want my students to feel as though

they are able to take risks in order to further their

academic success. In order to do so, they must feel
comfortable and confident in the material and in
themselves. As the instructor I will be able to use the
zone of proximal development in order to understand
their competency level and know how much they are
able to do by themselves. The scaffolding method will
be used appropriately in order to have my students
succeed at the highest level. Also, differentiated
instruction will allow for better participation and
engagement across all students.

Strategies to Use
In order to understand and know at which competency

levels my students are at and whether or not they need

help, formative assessments are necessary. With the
information gained from the assessments, the instructor is
able to decide how much they are able to challenge the
students using Krashens i+n hypothesis or scaffold the
them in their learning process.
As teachers it is important to know the students and have

strong relationships with them. More often then not they

know and understand more than we as teachers like to
think.
These formative assessments could range anywhere from a
Q&A in class to a small weekly quiz.
The use of a Pre and Post-Exam is another form of
measuring the students competence in the subject and have
proven to be effective.

A Disposition and
Strategies Designed to
Engage and Motivate
Students to Learn

Disposition
In order to teach students in any content area or

age, they need to be motivated and engaged. The

students are most motivated and engaged if they are
able to find meaning and make connections between
what they are learning in class and their own
personal experiences. The teachers are able to make
these connections by getting to know their students
and their interests. Incorporating their interests into
the class content is key to gaining the attention and
motivation of students.

Strategies to Use
In a classroom there will always be many different types

of learners. In order to have the students become engaged

it is important to have differentiated teaching techniques.
For example, one day I might teach a lesson using total

physical response whereas the next I focus on my audio

learners.

Making connections from what they are learning in the

classroom to the students own lives is so important. If the

students are able to connect something they are learning
in class to a personal experience they create meaning in
their learning process.
Giving examples, showing interest in what the students like

etc.
