Literary Elements in Othello Act V

Tragic Irony: the most noble and most deserving person, because of
the very grounds of his or her excellence, dies in defeat
The most noble and most deserving person in the play of Othello is
Desdemona. She is the representation of purity throughout the play. She is
loyal and honest 'til her death. Even as Othello wrongfully kills her, she can't
help but continue loving him. The only lie Desdemona says in the entire play
is in her last words. When Emilia asks who murdered her, Desdemona says it
was herself. In this lie she proves her everlasting love for Othello. Even
though he just killed her, she still tries to protect him.
Recognition: the moment at which a chief character recognizes the
happy or awful truth.
Othello realizes the truth right after Emilia realizes her role in Desdemonas
death. Othello realizes he was fooled after Emilia says she gave Iago the
handkerchief, which he specifically requested. It is then that he comes to see
that honest Iago manipulated him.
Denouement Falling Action: the conclusion of a plot, the resolution.
Soft you; a word or two before you go.
I have done the state some service, and they know't.
No more of that. I pray you, in your letters,
When you shall these unlucky deeds relate,
Speak of me as I am; nothing extenuate,
Nor set down aught in malice: then must you speak
Of one that loved not wisely but too well;
Of one not easily jealous, but being wrought
Perplex'd in the extreme; of one whose hand,
Like the base Indian, threw a pearl away
Richer than all his tribe; of one whose subdued eyes,
Albeit unused to the melting mood,
Drop tears as fast as the Arabian trees
Their medicinal gum. Set you down this;
And say besides, that in Aleppo once,
Where a malignant and a turban'd Turk
Beat a Venetian and traduced the state,
I took by the throat the circumcised dog,
And smote him, thus.
Stabs himself
-Othello (Act V, scene ii)

In Othellos last words, he asks for the story to not be skewed but told exactly
as it was.
He redeems himself and confesses his sins. Then, he stabs himself.
Catastrophe: the concluding action of a tragedy, where the principal
character meets with death or other significant defeat.
After Othello stabs himself, he drags himself beside Desdemona and says he
kissed her before he killed her and now hell kiss her before he dies. Then, he
kisses her for the last time before he dies.
Tragedy: a serious fiction involving the downfall of a hero or heroine.
The tragedy of Othello is that if he had just waited a few more minutes, he
would have heard from Emilia that it wasnt Cassio who died but Roderigo,

and he might have been able to speak for himself and Desdemona and
unravel the truth before the piling of bodies. After all, Cassio knew nothing of
Othellos thoughts until the very end when it was too late. But Shakespeare
makes tragedies so this is how it had to end.
