Themes IC
Theme I, Chapter 6, Page 106:
Science as a Process:
With observation, the lock and key model for enzymes became outdated and was replaced with the more
accurate induced fit model.
Theme II, Chapter 6, Page 108:
Evolution:
An inherited mutation causes an enzyme in Siamese cats to only be active at cooler body temperatures,
causing darker areas of fur on their body.
Theme III, Chapter 7, Page 117:
Energy Transfer:
Solar energy flows from the sun and is absorbed by chlorophyll in the thylakoid membrane of plants,
which is then used as energy to drive photosynthesis.
Theme IV, Chapter 8, Page 141:
Continuity and Change:
Cellular respiration can be done, with or without oxygen, due to the fact that it can occur with glycolysis
or with glycolysis and fermentation. This causes it to continue on, even if different conditions, and a lack
of oxygen was probably what lead to the changes that allowed fermentation to happen.
Theme V, Chapter 7, Page 117:
Relationship of Structure to Function:
The double membrane around a chloroplast and the fluid filled interior in plants is called a stroma. The
stroma is engulfed in an enzyme-rich solution, which aids in photosynthesis by helping to reduce carbon
dioxide into a carbohydrate.
Theme VI, Chapter 8, Page 140:
Regulation:

When exercising, lactic acid builds up in the muscles of humans. At first, blood tries to remove the acid,
because it is toxic to cells, but eventually it builds up and we start to breathe heavily in order to rid the
body of lactate and transport it to the liver.
Theme VII, Chapter 7, Page 116:
Interdependence in Nature:
Autotrophs, who survive on food they produce themselves, can sustain all living things on earth with
almost every food chain being linked back to them. Heterotrophs depend on the energy transferred from
aututrophs when they eat them.
Theme VIII, Chapter 8, Page 140:
With technology and modern medicine, we can see that carbon monoxide is deadly and when humans
breathe in polluted air, it interferes with the bodys ability to function. This can lead society as a whole to
want to clean up the earth and look for greener ways to function.
