Chapters 1-15
As you read:
The first chapters of a novel introduce you to the conflicts, or struggles, that the
characters will face throughout the course of the story. External conflicts are
struggles between characters who have different goals or between a character and
forces of nature. Internal conflicts are psychological struggles that characters
experience when they are unhappy or face difficult decisions. External conflicts
often trigger internal conflicts.
As you read the first fifteen chapters of Huckleberry Finn, use two different color
highlighters to keep track of external and internal conflicts. Annotate your text
with notes about what you learn about the characters based on the struggles they
face.
Pay special attention to the relationship between Huck and Jim. Highlight examples
of how Huck treats Jim as well as how he feels about him. Annotate changes that
you notice as well as what you think causes these changes.
