Objective:
Verification of Hookes law for spring under Compression.

Apparatus:
Compression spring apparatus.

Diagram:

Explanation:
Spring:
The device used to store mechanical energy. It is mostly
made of mild steel.
The spring is used in our practical life in many branches. The
applications are discussed below.
Types:
o Tension Spring
o Compression spring
Stress:
The internal force which is applied by the object in resistance
to the external force applied on that object.
Strain:
The Deformation appears in the object on which the fore is
applied.
Hookes law states that:
For relatively smaller deformations of body, the size of
deformation is directly proportional to the deforming force applied.

Mathematically:
Fx
Or

F = - kx

The negative sign indicates the direction of the restoring force F

is always opposite to the direction of the compression Y and the
proportionality constant k. The behavior is shown by a straight line of
graph between Force and Compression.
Spring Constant (k) :
k is known spring constant.
Its Value is dependent on:

Material
Physical Condition
Dimension
Shape
Others

Procedure:

1.

I calibrated the spring compression apparatus to remove

any error.
2. I made a reference point to note the reading.
3. Then I add a weight of kg and noted the compression.
4. Then I go on adding weight by kg and noted the
distance of compression.
5. After taking 6 reading I removed the weight and noted the
reading.
6. I repeated this step until all the weight is removed.
7. After noting the reading I find the mean of loading and
unloading compression.
8. Then I calculated the value of constant k.
9. After calculating k I plotted a graph between Force and
Compression.

Conclusion/Discussion:
The reading we have noted have approximately verified
the Hooks Law. The graph is not a straight line due to non-ideal
conditions and instrumental errors.

Applications:
Compressible springs are used in:
Shocks of vehicle.
