Onenightin2001,Iwashavingdrinkswithafriendofmineatabar.Wewereaboutto
orderadrinkandmyfriendgrabbedapackofmatches,turnedtomeandsaid,Watch.
Hemadeamatchchangecolors,vanishandreappearandthentoreitinhalfand
restoreditrightbeforemyeyes!
Iknowthesewereprobablytheonlytricksheknewandhethoughttheywere
simplebutIthoughttheyweresimplyamazing!Fortunatelyforme,hetaughtmethe
methods.Afterpracticingforabout3minutes,IknewIhadtotrythemout.
Standingnearmeatthebarweretwogirls,outforthenightwiththeirpartydresseson.
Theonenearestmehadasundressonwithlegsthatcouldmakeagrownmancry.
Everythingonherwasputtogether.Fromherhighlightedblondehairtoherperfect
makeupandPradabag.Thisgirlmeantbusiness.
Sheandherfriendwerealsogivingoffaverycoldandsnobbyvibe.Youknowthetype
Imsure.Itshardenoughtogetthenervetoapproachagirllikethatandevenharder
torememberyournameonceyoudomuchlessengageherinaconversationthatwill
keepherinterested.
TheresalotIknownowthatIdidntknowthenaboutopeningandrunninggamewith

verycool.
Shepulledmeovertoherfriendsafewfeetawayandtoldmetodoitforthem.I
refusedandsaidImsorry,Imoffworktonight,ImnotarealmagicianIjustplayone
onTVthatkindofstuff.ThenIsaidIwasgoingbacktomyfriendbecauseitwasmy
roundfordrinkswhichistrue.
IseehowpowerfulnotperformingthetricksagainwasbecauseafterIboughtthe
drinksshecamebackoverandfoundme.Shewasbeggingtoknowthesecrets.My,
myhowthetableshaveturned.
Inevershowedherthemethodstomyfutureobsession,butinsteadwentoffinto
anotherflirtyconversationaboutalotofotherthings.ThatinteractionandthewayI
playeditpaidoffhandsomely.Ididshowheronemoretrickthatnightmuchlater.

NoticeintheexampleaboveIneveraskedherifshewantedtoseeamagictrick.She
wasntexpectingmagicuntilitalreadyhappened.Also,bypullingawayandnot
succumbingtoherbeggingIwasabletogenerateevenmorecuriosityfromher.
Obviously,themagictricksdidntgetmethegirl.ButtheygavemeanangleIwouldnt
havehadotherwise.Moreimportantlyitenhancedmypersonalityandgaveher
somethingthatmostguysatthebarthatnightcouldntfun.
EverynightIwentoutonthetownafterthatnightIperformedthesetricksfor
someone.EitherforgirlsIwashittingonormyfriends(whogotsickofthesame
tricksbuttheysawhoweffectivetheywere).
Ilearnedthehardwaythatopeningandapproachingagirlwithmagictricksisvery
dangeroustoyourgame.Thatfirstnightwasbeginnersluck.Buttheseskillswereto
powerfultonotuseinaninitialopen.Soaftertime,Ifiguredoutacoupleoftechniques
toopenasetofgirlsorasinglegirlupwithoutlookinglikeaclown.
MyfavoriteandbyfartheeasiestiswhenIcausethegirlIminterestedtocomeover
andopenME!Illrevealthatinanotherchapterinexplicitdetailthough.
SoafterIsawthelightofhowwellmagicworkswhenusingityougameIbecame
obsessedwithlearningmoretricks.IwenttoeverywebsiteIcouldthinkoftolearnas
manytricksasIcould.IveforgottenmoretricksthanIknowbecauseIneverhada
chancetousethemtheywerentappropriateforbarandsocialsettings.
Ispentoverathousanddollarsdownloadingvideos,buyingDVDs,grabbingeverythingI
couldgetmyhandson.Iwasdrinkingfromthefirehoseofmagic!
IndoingallthisIwasalsofilteringdownallthetricksthatIcoulddowhenIwasoutwith
myfriendsanddiscardingalltheonesthatdidnt.Forinstance,IlovecardmagicandI
knowsomegreattricks,butImnotagoodcardmagicianbecauseIdonttakethemto
bars.Ididgetreallygoodatcloseupthough.
ButabigdifferencebetweenbeingaP.U.M.A.andacloseupstreetmagicianisthat
P.U.M.A.sneveruseobjectsthatmakeitlooklikehecameoutintendingtodomagic.If
Icarrymagicwithme,itsprobablygoingtobecoinorcurrencymagicandafewother
neattricksofthetradethatarecompletelyinconspicuoustothegirlwereperforming
