Title of Lesson: The Human Body Digestive Lesson Length: 60 Minutes

System
Overview of the Lesson
Lesson Summary:
This lesson introduces the digestive system and the connection it has with the other
parts of our body. The students will generate questions and predictions about the
digestive system. They will learn the important parts of our body that make up the
digestive system (esophagus, intestines, stomach). By looking at large pictures, they
will brainstorm, evaluate, and discuss what they notice and what the pictures have to
do with the digestive system. To conclude the lesson, students will explore a human
body app on their computers for 10 minutes and explain what they learned from the
app through writing and pictures.
Massachusetts Framework Standards:

Describe the connection between the parts of the body associated with the
digestive process (RI.1.3)
With assistance, categorize and organize facts about the digestive system to
answer questions (W.1.8)
Generate questions and gather information to add to a KWL Chart pertaining to
The Human Body (W.1.8)
Lesson Objectives: The students will be able to

Identify the digestive system.

Recall basic facts about the digestive system and list them on a KWL Chart.
Show what they learned from the human body app through writing and
pictures.
Materials/Equipment to be Used in Teaching the Lesson:
Computer (for video), Core Knowledge Domain 2: The Human Body Anthology, Core
Knowledge Domain 2: The Human Body Image Cards, student computers, Science
Heroes 1 App, writing paper
Enduring Understandings:

Big Ideas: The students will understand that our digestive system helps our
body break down food and begins with the mouth and continues to the
esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine, and then becomes
waste.
Concepts: digestive system, digestion, esophagus, intestine, stomach
Essential Questions:

Why do we need food?

How does our food get carried to other parts of our body?

How does our muscular system work with our digestive system?
Content
Factual Content: The students will expand their knowledge about the digestive
system.
Vocabulary:
Tier 1: body, mouth, food, eating
Tier 2: swallow, chew, energy, stomach, waste
Tier 3: esophagus, small intestine, large intestine, digestion, voluntary, involuntary

Action/Instructional Procedures
Procedures: For each procedure, list the teacher or student actions (with
accommodations and modifications) as well as the anticipated amount of time it will
take to accomplish each task.

(Step 1) Hook/Attention Getter: Remind students that at the end of

yesterdays read-aloud, there was a clue about the system they will be
learning about today. In the previous read-aloud it said, Well have a lot to
chew on. Ask them to guess what she meant. Then, affirm that they are
going to talk about food and how food travels through their bodies. Explain
that today we will be learning about one specific system that helps our body
work: The digestive system. (10 Min)
o Tell the class that at the end of todays lesson, we will be adding more
to our learned section!
o Tell the class that while watching the movie, think of two things they
noticed and would want to share.
o Show the Magic School Bus Inside the Human Body video
o Have the students turn and talk and share their two things.

(Step Three) Direct Instruction: Read Core Knowledge Domain 2: The

Human Body Anthology.
o Ask questions throughout (15 Min)
(Image 4A-1: Food) What do you see in the picture? Are any of
your favorite foods pictured?
(After reading digestive system) Who remembers what a system
is? (a group of organs that work together in the body) The
digestive system is the group of organs that work together to
help your body turn the food you eat into energy.
How do your muscles help the digestive system?
(Image 4A-5: Small Intestine) What do you notice in this picture?
Turn and talk

(Step Four) Guided Practice: Ask follow up questions to check for

understanding. (10 Min)
o Literal: How long does it take the body to process, or digest, food?
(about two days)
o Inferential: Why do you need food? (It provides the energy you need to
stay alive and to grow.)
o Inferential: Are the stomach muscles voluntary or involuntary?
(involuntary)
o Evaluative: (Use Image Cards 15 to have students sequence the
digestive process: mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and
large intestine.)

(Step 5) Independent Practice: Explain to the class that they will get a
chance to explore a really fun, interactive App on their own computers! Place
a computer and headphones at every seat, already powered on. Instruct the
students to walk back to their seats and open their computers. (10 Min)
o Open your computer and click on the Science Heroes 1: The Digestive
System for Kids App.
o Put your headphones on and press start
o Begin exploring the App by following the simple, kid friendly directions!

(Step 6) Wrap Up: After exploring the App, students will have the chance
to show what they know through pictures and words. Ask students to write
what they noticed in the App and what they learned, liked, disliked, and didnt
understand. They can also explain through pictures. (15 Min)
o Write/draw independently to explain what you learned, liked, disliked,
and didnt understand about our new App!
