1. For someone working in your field, please describe the fantasies versus realities of the job.
(fantasy vs. reality)
There are two reactions to me saying I am a NICU nurse: either aw thats so sad or what fun! Since I am the
eyes and ears of the doctors, I dont play with healthy babies all day, but Im always taking vitals and running
around.
2. What is your current educational level? What continuing education and training are required?
(educational level and requirements)
I have a Bachelors in Science (BSN), and a Neonatal IC certification. I have to have 20 hours of continuing
education every 3 years.
3. Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.
(day-to-day activities)
There is never a day to day in the NICU. I always have to maintain communication with my coworkers, I have
to manage feedings, medications, beds, and time.
4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field?
(job security)
My field is pretty secure only if you are on your toe, so dont make any bad decisions. There is a large demand for
health professionals too.
5. What are the hours you work?
I work 3 days a week with 12 hour shifts at least. We can also pick up extra shifts if we want them too.
6. What potential for growth is there in your field?
(growth potential)
With more education, you can become a nurse practitioner, do research, and even teach.

Revised Fall 2013

***Questions 7-10 will be created by the ISM student.

7. Why did you choose this area of nursing?
I knew that I always wanted to work with babies in the health field. It all started when I saw the movie Steel
Magnolias, and choose to become a nurse vs. a doctor. When I went to college, I toured a NICU and knew that
that was where I wanted to be.
8. What education is required to be hired for your job?
The hospital requires an Associates Degree in Nursing and RN certification, but a Bachelors Degree in Nursing
is recommended.
9. Does your hospital provide funds for your clothing, continuing education, and retirement?
They rarely provide funds for clothes, but they reimburse us for our continuing education, and they do provide
401K.
10. If you could go back in time, and change your career path, would you?
No. I am confident that I choose the perfect career for me!
