Force,inmechanics,anyactionthattendstomaintainoralterthemotionofabodyortodistortit.The
conceptofforceiscommonlyexplainedintermsofNewtonsthreelawsofmotionsetforthinhis
PrincipiaMathematica(1687).AccordingtoNewtonsfirstprinciple,abodythatisatrestormovingata
uniformrateinastraightlinewillremaininthatstateuntilsomeforceisappliedtoit.Thesecondlawsays
thatwhenanexternalforceactsonabody,itproducesanacceleration(changeinvelocity)ofthebodyin
thedirectionoftheforce.Themagnitudeoftheaccelerationisdirectlyproportionaltothemagnitudeofthe
externalforceandinverselyproportionaltothequantityofmatterinthebody.Newtonsthirdlawstates
thatwhenonebodyexertsaforceonanotherbody,thesecondbodyexertsanequalforceonthefirstbody.
Thisprincipleofactionandreactionexplainswhyaforcetendstodeformabody(i.e.,changeitsshape)
whetherornotitcausesthebodytomove.Thedeformationofabodycanusuallybeneglectedwhen
investigatingitsmotion.
Becauseforcehasbothmagnitudeanddirection,itisavectorquantity.Therepresentationofforcesby
vectorsimpliesthattheyareconcentratedeitheratasinglepointoralongasingleline.Thisis,however,
physicallyimpossible.Onaloadedcomponentofastructure,forexample,theappliedforceproducesan
internalforce,orstress,thatisdistributedoverthecrosssectionofthecomponent.Theforceofgravityis
invariablydistributedthroughoutthevolumeofabody.Nonetheless,whentheequilibriumofabodyisthe
primaryconsideration,itisgenerallyvalidaswellasconvenienttoassumethattheforcesareconcentrated
atasinglepoint.Inthecaseofgravitationalforce,thetotalweightofabodymaybeassumedtobe
concentratedatitscentreofgravity(seegravity,centreof).
Physicistsusethenewton,aunitoftheInternationalSystem(SI),formeasuringforce.Anewtonisthe
forceneededtoaccelerateabodyweighingonekilogrambyonemetrepersecondpersecond.Theformula

givenbody.IncountriesstillusingtheEnglishsystemofmeasurement,engineerscommonlymeasureforce
inpounds.Onepoundofforceimpartstoaonepoundobjectanaccelerationof32.17feetpersecond
squared.
