Section

STANDARD: Standard - 3.2.4.B5:

Demonstrate how vibrating objects make sound and sound can make things vibrate.
Demonstrate how light can be reflected, refracted, or absorbed by an object.
I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):
3rd grade students will define light and how it travels by sorting various objects that
give off light and do not and proving how light travels in a straight line.
II. Instructional Materials
1. Paper bag filled with
a. Modeling clay,
b. Premade cardboard squares with either circles, squares,
triangles, octagons, or a cone in the middle,
c. A flash light,
d. One cardboard square with a target on it.
e. Directions
2. Powerpoint
3. Guided Note Sheet
4. Science Journals
5. Pencils
6. 20 Flashlights
7. Items to sort: flashlight, candle, apple, hairspray, pillow, lamp,
laser, cell phone, a picture of the sun, a pencil sharpener,
pencil, and crayons.
III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea, outline of
additional content)
A. Prerequisite skills

1. Fine motor skills

2. Note-taking skills
B. Key Vocabulary
1. Light-the natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things
visible.
C. Big Idea
1. Where does light come from?
2. How does light travel?
D. Additional content
IV. Implementation
A. Introduction1. To introduce this, the teacher will shut off lights and ask
students to try to take notes in the dark to motivate and provoke
interest about light.
2. The teacher will ask thought provoking questions to establish
connection such as
a. Is anyone afraid of the dark?
b. What types of objects give off light?
c. How can we tell something has light?
d. Tell a story where you interacted with light.

B. Development
1. The teacher and students will create a class definition of light
from the book and discussion.
2. The teacher will present a short, interactive PowerPoint about
what light is and its properties.
3. Next, the teacher will ask students to sort objects brought in
from home, (flashlight, candle, apple, hairspray, pillow, lamp,
laser, cell phone, a picture of the sun, a pencil sharpener,
pencil, and crayons).
4. Now understanding, what objects give off light, students will
split up into groups based on tables and explore how light
travels in a straight line.
5. Each group will be given a bag with modeling clay, premade
squares with either circles, squares, triangles, octagons, or a
cone in the middle, a flash light, and one square with a target
on it. Directions will be included in the bag.
6. After completing experiment, Students will record information
in their science notebooks and will share information with the
class. (Notebooks will be checked to be assessed formally, as
well as informally assessed with presentation to class.)
C. Closure

1. Students will play flashlight tag to understand how light travels

to one spot.
2. Teacher will verbally review key terms and main idea.
D. Accommodations/Differentiation
1. Guided notes and detailed instruction will be given to all
students.
E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan
1. Formative
a. The teacher will float and observe while in group
activity and individually making notes and using
checklist for each child.
2. Summative
a. Science notebooks will be collected at the end of the
lesson.

V. Reflective Response
A. Report of Student Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives (Reflection on
student performance written after lesson is taught, includes remediation for
students who fail to meet acceptable level of achievement)
Remediation Plan
B. Personal Reflection (Questions written before lesson is taught. Reflective
answers to question recorded after lesson is taught)
