Task 1.

3 History of Editing
Editing is a very effective and has grown into a very important part of media and
how music videos are made. Near enough every music video has some sort of
editing within in, whether it be wipes through to long takes. There is a history to
editing which I will explain in more detail now.
The Lumiere Brothers invented Cinematographe, which was a three in
one device that recorded, captured and projected motion in one picture,
the word cinema drives from the word Cinematographe.
Edwin S Porter, although the Lumiere Brothers had a great invention,
Edwin S Porter came along and showed that a film didnt have to be one
long still during the year 1901. Edwin S Porter also used footage to tell a
different story unrelated to what the footage originally was meant to
represent.
In 1908 D.W Griffiths filmed for Love of Gold featured the first ever
continuity cut when a scene cut was present. Griffiths then realised that
emotions could also be portrayed through different camera angles and
pace of editing, he realised that it did not have to just come from the
actors. Griffiths was given the credit of the invention of the close up
and the first American feature film.
Soviet director and film theorist Lev Kuleshov made the discovery of the
Kuleshov Effect. The effect was a montage effect on a film, which Lev Kuleshov
believed would appeal to audiences and what they can respond to.
George Melies was a French illusionist and filmmaker famous for leading many
technical and narrative developments in the earliest days of cinema. He is most
famous for creating the stop trick in 1896, and was one of the first filmmakers
to use multiple exposures, time lapse photography, dissolves and hand painted
colour in his work.
Wilhelm Steenbeck in Hamburg, Germany founded the Steenbeck company in
1931, as a result of this the name Steenbeck is associated with film editing
throughout the world, there are over 25,000 machines in operation around the
world. Steenbeck is a brand name that is known for its flatbed film editing suit,
which is usable with both 16mm and 35mm optical sound, and magnetic sound
film.
Walter Scott Murch is an American film editor and sound designer, Murch stared
editing and mixing sound with Francis Ford Coppolas The Rain People (1969).
Walter Scott Murch is most famous for his work he produced on the famous The
Godfather.

Edward Dmytryk was a Canadian-born


Amercian film director. He was best known for
his 1940s film noirs and nominated for Best
Director Oscar for the film Crossfire. He made
his first directorial debut with The Hawk in
1935, however he was best known for Murder
and My Sweet.
Compositing is the combining of visual
elements from separate sources into single
images, often to create the illusion that all of
those elements are included in the same scene. Live-action shooting for
compositing is known as chroma key, blue screen and green screen.
Foley Sound is the reproduction of everyday sound effects that are added to film,
video and other media productions in order to enhance audio quality. This
reproduction of sounds can vary from many different sounds, e.g. doors
slamming.
The Video Home System (VHS) is a standard consumer level use of analogue
recording within videocassettes. Victor Company of Japan (JVC) developed VHS in
the 1970s; VHS was developed for home video, home movie, educational films,
documentaries and many more.
Final Cut Pro is the name given to the editing software, which was first developed
by Macromedia Inc and later on Apple Inc. Final Cut Pro is a video editing
software, this enables people to edit videos on laptops and computers. Final Cut
Pro is a very advanced piece of software, e.g. it allows 99 video tracks to be
layered on top of each other.
