6 Full Wave Bridge Rectifier

6.1 Introduction:
A rectifier is a circuit widely used in power supplies, converters and other electronic devices
where we need to reduce AC voltages to DC values. Full wave rectifier gives two cycle over
complete input. Full wave rectifier is better in many aspects then half wave as it have double
average power, load handling capacity and less ripple factor.

6.2 Objective

2.
3.
4.
5.

To study basic parameters of full wave rectifier and their importance.

To implement full wave rectifier and study the input and output wave difference.
To observe effect of capacitor filter in full wave rectifier.
To calculate ripple factor graphically using oscilloscope.
To troubleshoot the bridge rectifier circuit.

6.4 Conduct of Lab

1. Students are required to perform this experiment using the equipment provided.
2. Students are required to work in a group specified by lab engineer.
3. In case some aspect of the lab experiment is not understood the students are advised
to seek help from the course instructor, lab engineers, assigned teaching assistants
(TA) and lab attendants.

6.5 Theory and Working

The bridge rectifier uses four diodes connected as shown in figure 1. When the input cycle is
positive as in figure 1, diodes D1 and D2 are forward-biased and conduct current in the
direction shown. A voltage is developed across RL that looks like the positive half of the input
cycle. During this time, diodes D3 and D4 are reverse-biased.

Figure 1 full wave bridge rectifier during positive half cycle D1 and D2 conducts
When the input cycle is negative as in figure 2, diodes D3 and D4 are forward biased and
conduct current in the same direction through RL as during the positive half-cycle. During the
negative half-cycle, D1 and D2 are reverse-biased. A full-wave rectified output voltage appears
across RL as a result of this action.
