Lesson 3 - Online Communication

(Student Book a Pg. 10 - 13)
Starter What is an online community?
An online community is a virtual community whose members interact with each other
primarily via the Internet.
1.

Match the following information exchanges to their correct descriptions.

Web logs
(blogs)

Microblogging
sites

Wikis

Chatrooms

2.

These are a site which allows users to create and

exchange really short text entries. A popular
example of this type of site is Twitter.
These are websites that provide information that
visitors to the site can extend and edit. They allow
users to share information and are useful for
research. The best-known example of a wiki is
Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia that can be
updated by contributors.
These are frequently updated online journals with
diary-like entries which allow people to express their
thoughts and feelings and give details of their daily
activities. Typically, a blog includes text, photos and
sometimes video.
Online communication within communities is
sometimes referred to as chat. Some of the large
interactive communities where people take part in
the same conversation or type of chat at the same
time are known as chatrooms.

Research and write a short description for each of the following key terms:

Electronic mail (e-mail)

Electronic mail, most commonly referred to as email or e-mail since ca. 1993, is a
method of exchanging digital messages from an author to one or more recipients.
Modern email operates across the Internet or other computer networks.

Instant messaging (chat)

Instant messaging (IM) is a type of online chat which offers real-time text
transmission over the Internet. A LAN messenger operates in a similar way over a
local area network.

Newsgroup
A Usenet newsgroup is a repository usually within the Usenet system, for messages
posted from many users in different locations. Despite the name, newsgroups are
discussion groups, and are not devoted to publishing news. Newsgroups are technically
distinct from, but functionally similar to, discussion forums on the World Wide Web.
Newsreader software is used to read newsgroups.

Social networking

A social network is a social structure made up of a set of social actors (such as

individuals or organizations) and a set of the dyadic ties between these actors.

remote locations.

Blogs
A blog (a truncation of the expression weblog) is a discussion or informational site
published on the World Wide Web and consisting of discrete entries ("posts") typically
displayed in reverse chronological order (the most recent post appears first). Until 2009
blogs were usually the work of a single individual [citation needed], occasionally of a
small group, and often covered a single subject.

Vlogs / Podcast
Video blog or video log, sometimes shortened to vlog /vl/ is a form of blog for
which the medium is video, and is a form of web television. Video logs (vlogs) also
often take advantage of web syndication to allow for the distribution of video over
the Internet using either the RSS or Atom syndication formats, for automatic
aggregation and playback on mobile devices and personal computers (See video
podcast).

What does VoIP stand for?

Voice over IP (VoIP) is a methodology and group of technologies for the delivery of
voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP)
networks, such as the Internet. Other terms commonly associated with VoIP are IP
telephony, Internet telephony, broadband telephony, and broadband phone service.

6.

What does VoIP do?

The term Internet telephony specifically refers to the provisioning of
communications services (voice, fax, SMS, voice-messaging) over the public
Internet, rather than via the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The steps
and principals involved in originating VoIP telephone calls are similar to traditional
digital telephony and involve signaling, channel setup, digitization of the analog
voice signals, and encoding. Instead of being transmitted over a circuit-switched
network, however, the digital information is packetized, and transmission occurs as
IP packets over a packet-switched network. Such transmission entails careful
considerations about resource management different from time-division
multiplexing (TDM) networks.

Loss of service during outages.

- Without power VOIP phones are useless, so in case of emergencies during power

- With VOIP emergency calls, it is hard to locate you and send help in time.
- Some times during calls, there may be periods of silence when data is lost while it is
being unscrambled.
- Latency and traffic. No standard protocol is applicable.
8.

What are the benefits of VoIP?

This has resulted in great economy for VOIP providers who in turn
Pass along the savings to the end user. Most top VOIP plans run
Around 30 dollars a month and the best include International calls
