In 4ABD, C is on AB such that CA = CB = CD and BCD = z .

Determine the measure of ADB.

Solution
Solution 1

Since ACB is a straight line, ACD + DCB = 180 but BCD = z so

ACD = 180 z .
In 4ACD, since CA = CD, 4ACD is isosceles and CAD = CDA = x .
The angles in a triangle sum to 180 so in 4ACD
CAD + CDA + ACD = 180
x + x + 180 z = 180
2x = z
z

x =
2
Similarly, in 4BCD, since CB = CD, 4CBD is isosceles and
CBD = CDB = y .
The angles in a triangle sum to 180 so in 4CBD
CBD + CDB + BCD = 180
y + y + z = 180
2y = 180 z
180 z
y =
2
Then ADB = CDA + CDB = x + y =

z

the measure of ADB is 90 .

See Solution 2 for a more general approach to the solution.

It turns out that it is not necessary to find expressions for x and y in terms of z
in the problem.

Solution 2
Here is a second solution to the problem.
In 4CAD, since CA = CD, 4CAD is isosceles and CAD = CDA = x .
In 4CBD, since CB = CD, 4CBD is isosceles and CBD = CDB = y .
The angles in a triangle sum to 180 so in 4ABD
BAD + ADB + ABD = 180
x + (x + y ) + y = 180
2x + 2y = 180
x + y = 90
But ADB = ADC + CDB = x + y = 90 .
the measure of ADC is 90 .
