Human Environment Interaction
_____________________________________________________________________________
Central Focus/Big Idea: Show students how they affect the environment and how the
environment affects us and how the environment affects itself.
Subject of this lesson: social studies and science
Grade Level: 4th grade
NC Essential Standard(s):
4. L.1.1
Give examples of changes in an organisms environment that
Are beneficial to it and some that are harmful.
4. G.1.3
Exemplify the interactions of various peoples, places and
Cultures in terms of adaptation and modification of the
Environment.
Next Generation Science Standard(s): 2-LS2 Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics
Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow.
21st Century Skills:
Communication
Students prepare and interpret a variety of methods for demonstrating understanding
and explaining the results of investigations including charts and graphs, diagrams and
illustrations, photographic images, and informational and procedural text.

Scientific Vocabulary: What are the key scientific terms that your students will learn
through this lesson?
Instructional Objective: students are expected to learn that many things affect the environment
around them and to show students how they can help their environment.
Prior Knowledge : 5 themes of geography, affects weather, sunlight, water, soil have on plants.
Content Knowledge Teacher will need to know the five themes of geography, human
environment interaction, teachers also need to know that plants need sun, water, soil, heat to
grow.
Accommodations for special needs Students with special needs can work in small groups and
work together throughout the activities, students may also be admitted more time to complete
tasks.
Materials and Technology requirements: Power point slide, notebook, paper, iPads or
computers.
Total Estimated Time: 30 minutes

Song

Safety considerations: students will be safe by handling iPads with care and keeping hands and
other objects to self.
Show students video and song about what plants need to grow, Have students get up and sing
along to song, play song twice if needed.
Ask students How do plants grow? (Water, solid, air, light, space) What would happen if you
took one of those things away from a plant? (It wouldnt grow well) Can the environment of a
place take away one of these elements? (No) No? what if you wanted to plant corn in a cave
could you plant corn there? (No) Why not? (There is no sun) Did we take that away or the
environment? (Environment) So can the environment affect other things in the environment
such as plants? (Yes)
Explore: The first thing that we are going to do today is play a little smart board game. Pull
up game onto smart board through internet
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/5_6/growing_plants.shtml
Have students come up and change something in the simulation to see if something different
happens with the plant as it grows. Ave each student come up and have a turn playing the
simulation.
Explanation: what made the plant grow? (Plenty of water, soil, sun, space, air) Lets see
what would happen if we took the light away demonstrate the simulator without light what
happens to the plant? (It dies) lets see what happens to the plant when you take the water
away, demonstrate on simulator, what happens to the plant? (It dies) why does this happen?
(Because it needs air, light, water, space, and soil) Can other things be affected by the
environment around them? (Yes) Give me some examples allow students to ponder and give
examples of the way the environment affects the things around it. What do we need to do in an
environment to thrive? (Adapt)
Elaborate: We are going to take a short quiz. I want you to take this quiz on a separate sheet of
paper and turn it into me when you are finished the questions will be on the board. You do not
need to write down the questions, only the answers.
Quiz:
1.Do plants need water to grow?
2.Can you give plants too much water?
3.Do all plants need light to grow?
4.What other questions could you ask about growing plants?
Evaluate: Formative assessment: will be my observations throughout the class, how interactive
are the students? Are students participating? Are students actively answering my questions?
Summative: Short quiz at the end of the lesson students should answer 3 of the 4 questions
correctly for lesson to be considered mastered.
After students are finished with quiz they can work on social studies article.
To be completed after the lesson is taught as appropriate
