Simple Machines Inquiry Based Lesson Plan

Teachers: Kimberly Wall
Lesson plan title: Simple Machines
Subject Area(s): ELA, Science

School: University of Scranton

Class: EDUC 343
Estimated Time: 45 minutes

Date: 11/12/2015
Grade: Second

Title of Unit:
Work
States Standards Met:
S3.A.3.1.1: Classify systems as either human-made or natural (e.g., human-made systems [balancing systems, tops, wheel
and axle systems, pencil sharpeners from manual to electric]; natural systems [plants, animals, water cycle, stream]).
S3.A.3.1.2: Identify changes in natural or humanmade systems.
Next Generation Science Standards Met:
3-5-ETS1-2. Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the
criteria and constraints of the problem.
Objectives:
DOK L1: Students will be able to identify the six simple machines.
DOK L: Students will be able to construct their own simple machine with materials given.
Essential Question(s):
How can we make work easier?
Materials Required:
PowerPoint, worksheets, pencils, experiment materials (screw game, door stopper, pulley, cars, books, ruler)
Vocabulary:
simple machine, screw, lever, inclined plane, pulley, wheel and axel, wedge.
Summary of Lesson:
Learning how to make work easier using simple machines.
Procedure:
Before: (approx. 5 minutes) Anticipatory Set
The teacher will read the statement of learning.
The teacher will put a box filled with books on the floor at the front of the class.
The teacher will ask a couple of students to come up and try to move the box. (engagement)
The teacher will explain that we can all probably lift the box, but it would talk a lot of work and it wouldnt be easy.
The teacher will ask the students what if you had to put it on a shelf that was as high as the ceiling? How would
you get it up there? (elaboration)
The teacher will write the answers on the board.
The teacher will ask What if you had to carry the box home?

During: (approx. 25 minutes)

Kimberly Wall

The teacher will start the power point by explaining what a simple machine is.
The teacher will ask one of the students to place the simple machine poster on the board and read it aloud.
(engagement)
The teacher will play the Simple Machines video. (E-Learning)
The teacher will go to the next slide and explain that there are 6 simple machines.
The teacher will ask thumbs up or thumbs down if you have ever heard of any of these simple machines.
The teacher will change the slide and talk about the inclined plane.
The teacher will ask a student put the inclined plane poster on the board and read it aloud. (engagement)
The teacher will ask the students how an inclined plan can be useful. (elaboration)
The teacher will talk about the wheel and axle.
The teacher will ask a student put the wheel and axle poster on the board and read it aloud. (engagement)
The teacher will ask the students to think pair share about things that have a wheel and axle. (elaboration)
The teacher will talk about the screw.
The teacher will ask a student put the screw poster on the board and read it aloud. (engagement)
The teacher will ask if the students know how a screw works. (elaboration)
The teacher will talk about the lever.
The teacher will ask a student put the lever poster on the board and read it aloud. (engagement)
The teacher will ask the students if they can think of a time when they used a lever. (elaboration)
The teacher will talk about a wedge.
The teacher will ask a student put the wedge poster on the board and read it aloud. (engagement)
The teacher will ask how wedges help us. (elaboration)
The teacher will talk about pulleys.
The teacher will ask a student put the pulley poster on the board and read it aloud. (engagement)
The teacher will ask if anyone has had an experience using a pulley. (elaboration)

After: (approx. 15 minutes) Assessment:

The teacher will have the Simple Machine stations set up.
The teacher will go over the rules with the students.
The students will get a worksheet that they need to fill out when they go to their assigned station. (evaluation)
The students will be allowed to explore the other stations. (exploration)
The students will wrap up by telling the class what their simple machine was and what they learned about the
simple machine. (explanation)
