depthstudyofatopic.Youcanassignprojectstoyourstudentsorhavethemchoosefromalist.Projects
canbestructured,topicrelated,oropenended.Weuseprojectstobuildonstudentsinterestsandtosatisfy
thecuriositythatstudentsmighthaveaboutatopic.Projectshelpstudentstodevelopresearchskillsand
learntomanagetheirtime.Studentsgainindependenceandselfdirectedlearningskillswhileworkingon
projects.Projectsallowstudentstoworkatmorecomplexandabstractlevelsthatmatchwheretheir
abilitiesareat.Projectshavetobedesignedwiththeendinmind.Youhavetohaveclearobjectives,but
youmustallowstudentstoreachtheseobjectivesintheirownways.Justlikeeveryotherthingthatyoudo
intheclassroom,projectsmusthaveprocedures(p.147)Rubricsareanideawaytogradeprojectsbecause
theyareflexibleandcanbeadjustedtotheprojects.
Anothertoolintheclassroomisproblembasedlearning.Thistechniqueincludesprovidingstudentswith
challengingopenendedproblemsthatstudentsmustfigureout.Theseproblemsshouldhavenooneright
answerandtheyshouldbelooselystructured.Studentsshouldhavetoapplythecontenttofigureoutthe
answer,andtheyshouldhavetodosomeinvestigating.Sharethestepsinproblemsolving(p.159)
